The circumstances leading up to the woman’s death were not provided.

“When officers arrived, they found the victim deceased and immediately began an investigation,” according to the Costa Mesa Police Department.

Police cordoned off the street while the investigation unfolded.

Upon further investigation, it was determined by detectives that the victim and suspect were friends, the department said. The suspect was located in Glendale, and Costa Mesa police detectives traveled there to arrest him.

The woman’s identity was being withheld pending notification of relatives.

Police also were withholding the name of the suspect to protect the victim’s identity.

Anyone with information regarding the death was urged to contact Detective K. Moore at 714-754-4986.

Long Beach considers permit to allow cannabis consumption in public events https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/long-beach-considers-permit-to-allow-cannabis-consumption-in-public-events/3541900/ 3541900 post 2739226 FILE - Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2019/09/732453081.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Long Beach native Snoop Dogg just turned 53 on Oct. 20, but if the Long Beach City Council moves fast enough, he’ll be able to celebrate No. 54 by smoking a blunt in public legally.

“In 2019, we started this conversation with the city and they were actually looking into it, but COVID shut it down,” said Pam Chotiswatdi, a cannabis educator with Long Beach Green Room. “Bringing this birthday party, picked it up where we left off.”

Four years later, allowing any public event to have permitted cannabis use is back in front of the city council. In August, the council unanimously agreed to commission a study to see how the permit might work and how the city could manage and benefit from it.

“We are looking to put Long Beach in a place to win,” said Al Austin, Long Beach City Councilmember. “It’s an economic opportunity that we see for businesses and large events.”

Currently, state law allows temporary permits but only with approval from the local city.

Last month, the state fair in Sacramento made history by becoming the first fair in the country to allow cannabis to be sold and consumed onsite. It was deemed a big success with more than 80,000 people attending.

“It shows California is a forward-thinking state. Long Beach is a forward-thinking city and this is an opportunity to make Long Beach an entertainment destination,” said Austin.

The city council could get something on the books by the end of the year.

Cannabis stores like Green Room hope it will lead to cannabis lounges where people can gather and consume cannabis anytime they want.

  • The company had raised 348.6 billion yen ($2.3 billion) in the largest initial public offering in Japan in six years. Shares were priced at the top-end of the IPO price band of 1,100 yen to 1,200 yen.
  • Reuters reported that the IPO was more than 15 times oversubscribed, with the portion available to retail investors around 10 times oversubscribed.
  • Shares of Japanese subway operator Tokyo Metro rose almost 45% Wednesday after a stellar IPO.

The company had raised 348.6 billion yen ($2.3 billion) in the largest initial public offering in Japan in six years. Shares were priced at the top-end of the IPO price band of 1,100 yen to 1,200 yen.

Tokyo Metro is one of Japan’s leading subway companies and the largest operator in Tokyo. The company is currently owned jointly by Japan’s national government and the Tokyo metropolitan government, with a 53.4% and 46.6% stake respectively.

Reuters reported that the overall IPO was oversubscribed more than 15 times, while the portion available to retail investors — almost four-fifths of the overall size — was oversubscribed around 10 times.

The shares available to domestic and foreign institutional investors, accounting for 1.5% and 20% respectively, were oversubscribed more than 20 and 30 times, Reuters reported.

Jesper Koll, expert director at financial services firm at Japan-based Monex Group in Tokyo, said the IPO was warmly received due to the company being a “cash cow.” Tokyo Metro is a “high dividend, stable cash flow generator,” and the company has a very low operational risk, he added.

“So whether you’re Mr. Watanabe [retail investor] … whether you’re the global investor or an institutional investor, this is a great share to own.”

Koll also pointed out that Tokyo Metro’s dividend outlook is “very stable,” and may even see a little upside.

This is because the demand for metro service in Japan’s capital remains very strong, and Tokyo’s population grows at almost 1% every year, he added.

Mio Kato, founder of LightStream Research, told CNBC’s “Street Signs Asia” last week that the stock has been priced “relatively cheaply,” describing it as a “a big banner IPO for the year.”

Japan stocks rose sharply in 2023 and the country was Asia’s best-performing market last year, with gains of over 28%. In 2024, the country’s stock benchmark Nikkei 225 has recorded fresh all-time highs, with year-to-date gains of 16.41%.

Jesus Garcia Sotelo, a San Fernando Valley resident, is suspected of robbing at least seven taco trucks and a 7-Eleven store, said Cpt. Warner Castillo of the Los Angeles Police Department.

A total of eight robberies occurred between Sep. 8 and Sep. 21 in the Van Nuys, North Hollywood, Foothill and Mission areas, according to the LAPD. In all cases, a firearm was used to threaten the victims.

Authorities said they were able to recover evidence of the robberies, including a vehicle at Sotelo’s residence.

Sotelo faces eight counts of robbery with a handgun, two counts of attempted murder with a handgun and 10 counts of assault with a firearm. He is being held without bail.

Authorities believe there may be additional victims and ask anyone with information to contact the LAPD’s North Hollywood Division at 818-754-8410. Anonymous calls may be made at 1-800-222-8477.

4 people arrested for series of ATM burglaries in San Fernando Valley https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/4-people-arrested-atm-robberies-at-los-angeles-businesses-north-hollywood/3541646/ 3541646 post 9979876 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/sylmar-ATM.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Four people who may be responsible for a series of burglaries and robberies, targeting ATMs at small businesses were arrested, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said.

After serving warrants in Sylmar and Canyon Country on Wed. Oct. 16, investigators arrested the four suspects, who are believed to have broken into several businesses in the San Fernando Valley area between Aug. 16 and Oct. 16, and confiscated the currency connected to the burglaries.

Also three cars used the crimes were recovered and impounded, the LAPD said.

“In all incidents, the suspects forced open the front door of the business, entered the premises, and tied a chain around the ATM machine,” Detective Commander Officer Samer Issa with the LAPD said during a live press conference. “The suspects then used their vehicle to pull the machines out of the business, loaded them into the back of their vehicle, and fled the scene.”

Issa said after the burglaries, the suspects removed cash from the ATMs and abandoned the stolen cars used in the crimes.

The burglaries caused thousands of dollars in damage to small businesses while disrupting their daily operations, Issa added.

Two other suspects remained at large as officials asked for the public’s information.

LAPD officials did not say which ATM burglaries were linked to the four suspects.

But ATM burglaries plagued a number of small businesses across Southern California, including the incident that happened in Sylmar on Sep. 25. Burglaries broke into Village Market and Liquor on Eldridge Avenue at around 2 a.m. by ripping off the metal gate, using a chain attached to a car, then pulling the ATM into their vehicle before driving away.

Similar crimes were reported in Orange County and the Inland Empire.

Orange County Supervisor Andrew Do admits to taking bribes, Feds say https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/feds-to-announce-corruption-charges-against-orange-county-supervisor-andrew-do/3541469/ 3541469 post 9978911 MediaNews Group via Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/GettyImages-1032155492.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Orange County Supervisor Andrew Do is expected to plead guilty to a federal charge for accepting more than half a million dollars in bribes to direct federal funds to his daughter’s nonprofit, the Justice Department said Tuesday.

Do, 62, is expected to make an initial appearance in United States District Court in Santa Ana later this month.

Do admitted that in exchange for $550,000 in bribes, he voted in favor of directing millions of dollars in COVID-related funds to Viet America Society, which was supposed to feed seniors during the pandemic with the federal money, according to the federal officials.

Do’s daughter, Rhiannon, is listed as an officer with the nonprofit.

The supervisor also admitted to abusing his position of trust as a county official, the Justice Department said, while working with other county employees to approve contacts with Viet America Society.

“Essentially he functioned like Robin Hood in reverse, and his conspirators stole money from the poor to give to themselves,” U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada said.

Estrada added the feds seized some $2.4 million in illicit proceeds generated through the corruption scheme, and Do has agreed to forfeit his rights to the money.

Do has agreed to immediately resign from the Orange County Board of Supervisors and forfeit any pension that he accumulated during the time period when he participated in the bribery scheme in addition to a property in Santa Ana and another in Tustin.

In response, the supervisor’s attorney, Paul S. Meyer, released a statement.

“It is appropriate to convey Andrew Do’s sincere apology and deep sadness to his family, to his constituents in District One and to his colleagues,” Meyer said.

Orange County is also suing Viet America Society for embezzling more than $13 million in federal funding.

After the FBI in August served search warrants at several locations linked to Viet American society as well as a Tustin home, which is owned by Do according to property records,  the Orange County Board of Supervisors censured Do, issuing a public condemnation.

Here are additional details of Do’s bribery scheme, according to the DOJ:

    • Between April 2021 and February 2024, Viet America Society paid “Company #1” $100,000 or more per month. Then, Company #1 began paying Rhiannon Do, the supervisor’s daughter, $8,000 a month.
    • Company #1 also transferred a total of $381,500 to an escrow company. Do’s daughter used the escrow account funds to purchase a home in Tustin for over $1 million.
    • Do admitted more than $380,000 from Company #1 was a disguised bribe to him.
    • Some of the bribe funds were sent to his daughters then later were spent by Do. In one incident, $14,849 was funneled to Do’s daughters then used to make property tax payments for Do’s properties.
    • Do also knew Viet America Society was not providing all the meals for which the county paid.

The memorial is intended to inspire L.A. City residents and visitors to think about their connections with P-22, and how the mountain lion’s legacy transformed conservation efforts. The National Wildlife Federation’s #SaveLACougars campaign and Friends of Griffith Park are leading the project in partnership with the L.A. City Department of Recreation and Parks and City Councilwoman Nithya Raman.

To receive submission guidelines for the sculptures, artists can email p22mountainlion@nwf.org to be considered for the process. Emails should be sent by Dec. 31.

In 2012, Friends of Griffith Park first discovered P-22, the mountain lion living in the park after crossing two busy L.A. freeways. P-22 changed how residents view the importance of living alongside wildlife, prompting the building of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing.

The mountain lion remained at the park for 10 years, monitored by a radio collar. P-22 was later captured in December 2022 and euthanized after tests revealed he suffered from traumatic injuries and long-term health issues.

“P-22 is still deeply missed by people all over the world, and his loss is especially felt in Los Angeles. This remarkable cat deserves a memorial that recognizes his incredible legacy and gives people a chance to reflect upon their love for him,” said Beth Pratt, California regional executive director for the National Wildlife Federation and lead at the #SaveLACougars campaign.

Gerry Hans, president of Friends of Griffith Park, said the proposed memorial will be a reminder to visitors far into the how future of how P-22 “triggered a sea of change.”

“P-22 led an incredible life as our resident Griffith Park mountain lion,” Raman said in a statement. “His improbable journey to Griffith Park, and the life he built here, reminds us that our great park was also his park.”

The demonstrators gathered in Dickson Court North on Monday for what was billed as a “teach-in on divestment,” where they used unauthorized structures and assembled in areas not designated for public expression.

The demonstrators arrived around 8:45 a.m. Monday, where they obstructed student pathways, according to the UCLA Police Department.

According to the Daily Bruin, the school’s newspaper, the protest began around 11:45 a.m., when protesters chanted, “UC, UC, you can’t hide, we charge you with apartheid.”

What protesters billed as a “Gaza solidarity sukkah” and several tents for a pro-Palestinian encampment were erected, prompting a representative from UCLA Student Affairs to inform organizers that they were violating the university’s “Time, Place, and Manner” policies because of where they were assembling, using unauthorized structures and amplified sound, and asked demonstrators to leave the area and remove the structures, according to the Daily Bruin and UCLA Police Department.

Security officers on bicycles attempted to remove a sign hung outside of Perloff Hall around 5:09 p.m., which read, “UCPD is Fascist. Abolition Now,” agitating protesters who pushed and shoved the officers.

The UCLA Police Department issued a dispersal order shortly after 8:30 p.m. The majority of the demonstrators had left, with several remaining in the area at 9 p.m. One person was taken into custody for failing to disperse.

A sukkah is a temporary hut constructed for use during the weeklong Jewish festival of Sukkot, which ends at sundown Wednesday.

  • Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries and two other men are charged in a federal indictment in New York with sex trafficking and interstate prostitution.
  • Jeffries is accused of committing crimes targeting would-be male models and other men with Matthew Smith and James Jacobson while running the iconic retail clothing brand.
  • The indictment says that in some instances Jeffries and Smith engaged in “non-consensual” sexual activity with the the men trafficked in the U.S. and to England, France, Italy, and Morocco.
  • Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries and two other men were arrested on charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution that allegedly occurred when Jeffries was leading the iconic clothing brand, authorities said Tuesday.

Jeffries, 80, and his romantic partner Matthew Smith are accused of coercing men into sex acts and paying for dozens of others to travel around the world to have sex with them for money, often leading the men to believe it would result in modeling work for Abercrombie.

The third defendant, James Jacobson, 71, was employed to recruit men “to perform commercial sex acts” for Jeffries and the 61-year-old Smith, according to a graphic, 16-count indictment in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

The indictment, which alleges criminal conduct spanning from 2008 to 2015, says that in some instances Jeffries and Smith engaged in “non-consensual” sexual activity with the men, who were trafficked in the U.S. and to England, France, Italy, Morocco and St. Barts at the cost of millions of dollars.

“Many of the victims, at least one of whom was as young as 19 years old, were financially vulnerable and aspired to become models in the fashion industry, a notoriously cut-throat world,” prosecutors wrote in a court filing.

“Indeed, some of the men they recruited had previously worked at Abercrombie stores or modeled for Abercrombie.”

U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Breon Peace, speaks during a news conference regarding the indictment of the former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch, Mike Jeffries on sex trafficking and prostitution charges, in Brooklyn,New York, U.S., October 22, 2024.

Jeffries served as CEO from 1992 through 2014 at Abercrombie. The company is in the midst of a comeback under CEO Fran Horowitz, who took the reins in 2017.

All three defendants face a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison if convicted of sex trafficking, and the potential for a life sentence on that charge alone.

The criminal case comes a year after the clothing company, Jeffries and Smith were sued in Manhattan federal court for allegedly turning a blind eye to sexual misconduct by the former CEO.

Jeffries and Smith are accused in that civil class-action complaint of operating a sex trafficking ring that exploited young men who had hoped to become models for the company.

“The message from today’s prosecution is clear: Sexually exploiting vulnerable human beings is a crime, and doing so by dangling of dreams of a future in fashion or modeling or any other business is no different,” Breon Peace, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said at a news conference Tuesday.

Jeffries was arrested in West Palm Beach, Florida. Smith also was arrested in that state.

At a hearing in federal court in West Palm Beach, a magistrate judge allowed Jeffries to be released on a $10 million bond, but said the former CEO must remain in his home and wear a GPS monitoring device.

Smith was ordered held pending his arraignment at a later date in federal court in New York. Prosecutors want him detained without bond because he is a citizen of the United Kingdom and therefore “poses the must substantial risk of flight.”

Jacobson was arrested in Wisconsin, where he lives. He was released on a $500,000 bond after making his initial appearance in federal court in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Tuesday afternoon.

Jeffries and Jacobson are set to be arraigned on Friday at 3 p.m. ET in federal court in Central Islip, Long Island, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven Tiscione.

All three men are charged with one count of sex trafficking, and 15 counts of interstate prostitution. Each prostitution charge carries a maximum possible prison sentence of 20 years.

The three defendants will be arraigned in U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of New York at a later date, according to a spokesman for Peace.

Brian Bieber, an attorney for Jeffries, told NBC News in a statement, “We will respond in detail to the allegations after the Indictment is unsealed, and when appropriate, but plan to do so in the courthouse – not the media.”

Brittany Henderson, an attorney for the plaintiff in the civil suit, told CNBC, “Today’s arrests are monumental for the aspiring male models who were victimized by these individuals.”

“Their fight for justice does not end here. We look forward to holding Abercrombie and Fitch liable for facilitating this terrible conduct and ensuring that this cannot happen again,” Henderson said.

Abercrombie & Fitch declined to comment.

The criminal indictment alleges that Jeffries and Smith, using Jeffries’ family office, allegedly hired and paid “an exclusive set of household staff” to facilitate “Sex Events,” which included arranging physical spaces and transporting the men.

Household staff acted as security for the events, and provided the participants, including Jeffries and Smith, with alcohol, drugs, and sex paraphernalia, the indictment alleges.

Jacobson or other staff paid the men recruited for the sessions, according to the indictment.

The defendants allegedly used “coercive, fraudulent and deceptive” recruiting tactics, including by leading men “to believe that attending the Sex Events could yield modeling opportunities with Abercrombie or otherwise benefit their careers,” the indictment says.

They also allegedly required prospective candidates to participate in “tryouts” with Jacobson.

The defendants are accused of misleading the men about the nature of the events, including by “incorporating Abercrombie products” into them or sending advance itineraries that resembled those used in photo shoots.

The men were forced to sign nondisclosure agreements and hand over personal items during the events, according to the indictment.

And “on more than one occasion,” Jeffries and Smith allegedly caused the men to inject their penises with a substance to induce erections — an act that “frequently caused the men to suffer painful physical reactions that lasted for several hours.”

The previously filed civil lawsuit says Abercrombie has settled several complaints “related to improper acts of Jeffries or Smith, some of which were related to sexual harassment or abuse.”

An amended complaint in that case, filed in September, notes that the BBC found after a 2023 investigation that “Jeffries and Smith sexually exploited what is believed to be over 100 men during Abercrombie events they hosted around the world.”

Jeffries led Abercrombie through its most explosive growth years in the 1990s and 2000s and used sex appeal to build an empire.

Under his direction, the brand became known for its use of half-naked models, sexually charged marketing and troops of shirtless men who were frequently positioned outside of its mall stores.

The accuser of Jeffries who sued the company last year, David Bradberry, said he was recruited for a modeling opportunity in 2010 and an associate of Jeffries made it clear that he needed to perform oral sex on him if he wanted to get the job and eventually meet with Jeffries.

Bradberry obliged and later went to a casting event at Jeffries’ house in the Hamptons that appeared to be a “legitimate Abercrombie-sponsored function” because the function included a meeting with Jeffries and he had to wear the brand’s clothes, according to his civil claim.

However, instead of a professional modeling event, Bradberry said in court records he was raped by Jeffries while four apparent security guards, dressed in Abercrombie clothing, watched.

Following the event, Bradberry was flown to Nice, France, and was again forced to perform sex acts on Jeffries, his complaint states.

The lawsuit, when amended in September to seek class-action status, alleged that similar events happened to more than 100 other victims and that Abercrombie did not do enough to stop it.

When the lawsuit was filed in October 2023, an Abercrombie spokesperson told CNBC the company does not comment on pending litigation.

But Abercrombie told the BBC last year that it was “appalled and disgusted” by Jeffries’ alleged behavior and had contacted an outside law firm to conduct an independent investigation into the issues raised by the news outlet.

“The company’s current executive leadership team and board of directors were not aware of the allegations of sexual misconduct by Mr. Jeffries,” the company told the BBC.

“For close to a decade, a new executive leadership team and refreshed board of directors have successfully transformed our brands and culture into the values-driven organization we are today,” Abercrombie said.

“We have zero tolerance for abuse, harassment or discrimination of any kind.”

The company has ditched the sexualized models and skintight clothes that made the store a go-to for teenage mall shoppers in the 1990s and 2000s, but later stirred controversy and fell out of favor with consumer trends.

Shares of Abercrombie & Fitch are up nearly 80% so far this year, after outperforming tech stars like Nvidia and Meta in 2023.

LA councilmember candidate gets backlash for derogatory comments about police https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/ysabel-jurado-derogatory-comments-police/3541110/ 3541110 post 9977662 Ysabel Jurado https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/ysabel-jurado.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A Los Angeles councilmember candidate is in the hot seat after a recording captured her making a derogative comment toward police.

Ysabel Jurado, a candidate for LA Council District 14, is addressing the backlash she received after her comments during a meet and greet with constituents at Cal State Los Angeles. In the recording, a student asks the councilmember hopeful what her stance on the police force is, and what her thoughts are on Councilmember Kevin De Leon’s funding for overtime for officers.

In response, Jurado is heard saying, “What’s that rapper’s? F— the police, that’s how I see them.”

Jurado issued a statement clarifying why her beliefs are shaped in that manner.

“In a meeting with students at Cal State LA, I quoted a lyric from a song that’s been part of a larger conversation on systemic injustice and police accountability for decades,” she said, referencing an NWA song. “But it was just a lyric — and I’m proud to be accessible to young people and students, listening to their concerns and treating them like the future leaders they are. That’s something my opponent has failed to do.”

Read below for Jurado’s full statement.

Some constituents expressed they thought Jurado’s response was crass.

“I just thought it was very immature,” said Margarita Amador, a resident of District 14. “Not only insulting LAPD, but law enforcement in general.”

Others didn’t think much of the candidate’s choice of words.

“I hear that every day from young people,” said Carlos Montes, another resident of District 14. “They wear little baseball caps with ‘FTP’ on it.”

In response to Jurado, LAPD Chief Dominic Choi issued a statement decrying her sentiments.

“Hearing the words ‘f— the police,’ is disappointing and diminishes the hard work and dedication of the men and women of the LAPD,” Choi said in his statement. “This divisive language only serves to erode what should be a positive and collaborative relationship between the police and the people we serve. Every day the men and women of the LAPD put their lives on the line to keep the people of Los Angeles safe, and I wish more people valued their sacrifice”

Incumbent candidate De Leon also denounced his opponent’s remarks.

“Those comments are simply disrespectful,” he said in a statement. “I stand where I’ve always stood, 100% behind our frontline officers who go out every day risking their lives to protect Angelenos across our city.”

Two years ago, De Leon was embroiled in his own scandal after a conversation between him, then-council president Nury Martinez and former councilmember Gil Cedillo was leaked. The recording included racist remarks against Indigenous Mexican immigrants and Councilman Mike Bonin’s son.

    Jurado’s full statement below:

In a meeting with students at Cal State LA, I quoted a lyric from a song that’s been part of a larger conversation on systemic injustice and police accountability for decades. But it was just a lyric — and I’m proud to be accessible to young people and students, listening to their concerns and treating them like the future leaders they are. That’s something my opponent has failed to do.

My commitment to public safety remains as strong as ever. Let’s focus on what matters, as laid out by the LA Times last week: our city is teetering on the edge of a fiscal emergency. We’re in this mess because of reckless decisions, including massive payouts for police misconduct. The result? A city broke, unable to fix busted sidewalks, broken streetlights, or trim trees—services that keep us safe and whole; services that we desperately need. The safest cities in America invest in parks, recreation, youth development, and public infrastructure—departments that my opponent has voted to gut down to less than 1% of the budget.

When I’m elected, I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and fight for the services and departments that keep us safe, healthy, and whole. It’s not enough to be tough on crime — we’ve got to be tough and smart, and operate with the fiscal responsibility necessary to fix our lopsided budget. And I’m prepared to work with whoever I need to—whether it’s the LAPD or colleagues I may not always see eye to eye with—because my priority is delivering for our district, plain and simple. Our campaign is about real solutions, not distractions.

Arrest made in Barney's Beanery valet's assault in West Hollywood https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/arrest-made-barneys-beanery-valets-assault-west-hollywood/3541070/ 3541070 post 9891737 Barney's Beanery https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/09/west-hollywood-valet-attack-91724.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Authorities arrested one person in connection with the brutal attack on a long-time valet at Barney’s Beanery in West Hollywood.

The suspect attacked 51-year-old Efrain Zarazua, who is known among his coworkers as “Frankie” outside the West Hollywood bar on Saturday, Sep. 14, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives believe the suspect was also behind other brutal assaults against at least five people between 10:15 p.m. and 10:35 p.m. Saturday.

The Sheriff’s Department is expected to hold a news conference Tuesday to share more details.

Zarazua’s son had said his father was recovering after being taken to the hospital in critical condition.

“It was horrific, sad and fills you with anger that somebody could do that to somebody else,” said A.J. Sacher, Zarazua’s colleague.

During the unprovoked attack, the suspect allegedly punched Zarazua in the face while he was working, causing him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness.

The suspect then kicked the victim several times on his head and upper body before fleeing the area on foot, according to sheriff’s officials.

Anyone with information on the assault suspect was urged to contact the West Hollywood Station, Detective Zeff, at 310-358-4033.

The sources added that Weinstein is currently undergoing treatment while in prison at Rikers Island in New York. Chronic myeloid leukemia is an uncommon form of cancer of the bone marrow, according to the Mayo Clinic.

In a statement to NBC News Monday night, Weinstein’s legal health care representative Craig Rothfeld said in part, “Out of respect for Mr. Weinstein’s privacy, we will offer no further comment.”

The news of Weinstein’s diagnosis comes amid a myriad of health issues. In September, Weinstein underwent emergency heart surgery to alleviate a significant amount of fluid from his lungs and heart.

In July, he was hospitalized and tested positive for Covid-19 and double pneumonia.

Weinstein’s health issues come amid his legal battle with Manhattan prosecutors over their efforts to combine his original 2020 sexual crimes with a new criminal indictment. Prosecutors have sought to consolidate the new charges with the ones previously brought against Weinstein so that they could be tried in court together.

Weinstein, who was serving a 23-year sentence, saw his New York conviction overturned earlier this year. That came after New York’s Court of Appeals found that the judge in the landmark trial prejudiced Weinstein with improper rulings, including a decision to let women testify about allegations that weren’t part of the case.

But Weinstein did not walk free amid the court’s decision because he was convicted in 2022 of rape in Los Angeles and sentenced to 16 years in prison. His legal team is currently appealing that conviction.

Niece of Jenni Rivera has warning for the public following food truck fire https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/niece-of-jenni-rivera-has-warning-for-the-public-following-food-truck-fire/3541045/ 3541045 post 9977426 NBCLA https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/abigail-rivera-food-truck-burns.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The niece of legendary Mexican singer Jenni Rivera and local businesswoman, Abigail Rivera, is recovering after a food truck fire burned several parts of her body.

Abigail Rivera is warning the public to take their time when it comes to matters of the kitchen after a rush left her with second-degree burns on her face, eyes and hands. It all started when she lit her food truck’s propane and stove in the wrong order.

“I turned off the knob as soon as I saw the explosion,” Riviera said. “Just my that was the last vision that I had. It’s just the whole fire coming in my face”

“So when I saw the fire, I turned it off and then I was still intact. So I was like, ‘Hey Abigail just breathe, you know breathe,’” she said. “My mistake was I was rushing.”

Rivera launched the “Casa Camarón y Sushi” brand with her husband in their kitchen after they both lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. They celebrated their truck’s grand opening in April. But she’s not new to the food industry, and that came in handy Saturday when she had a face full of flames.

“I’ve been working in the food industry since I was 16 at Jack in the Box; they always say to use mustard when you get burned. So I literally layered myself in mustard,” she said.

Support from customers and loved ones alike has been pouring in, including from her famous father, Lupillo Rivera — Mexican singer and brother of the legendary Jenni Rivera.

“He brought some remedies from Mexico. He did give me some serums, which I’m using right now, and I’m really thankful for that,” Rivera said.

Abigail hopes to have the truck back in business this week at their normal location of 7th Street and Magnolia Avenue in Long Beach. But the fire has taught her to slow down.

“You know, always take your time, especially when it comes to fire. It’s safety first one step at a time and I for sure learned this from my experience,” Rivera warns the public after her experience.

Dodgers vs. Yankees: What's changed since last time they squared off in 1981? https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/sports/mlb/dodgers-vs-yankees-whats-changed-since-last-time-they-squared-off-in-1981/3541033/ 3541033 post 9977371 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/image-69.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all It’s an all-star East Coast-West Coast showdown this week between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The two blue-blood franchises have won a combined 34 World Series titles, the most recent in 2020 when the boys in blue brought it home during the pandemic.

But the two teams haven’t faced each other when it matters since 1981. That last matchup ended with the Dodgers winning their fifth title.

So what’s changed in the past four decades? Well, a lot.

    World Series ticket prices

It’s not cheap to attend the World Series, at least not anymore.

Tickets to this year’s showdown are over four figures at the lowest, at $1,034 to attend Friday and $1,209 on Saturday in Los Angeles.

In New York, the cheapest ticket for game 3 is $1,385, and $1,110 for games 4 and 5.

Between both stadiums, some of the tickets in 1981 sold for $20 on the baseline, $15 for the upper deck, and $5 for the bleachers. That’s estimated to be $70, $52, and $17 in today’s money.

    Gas prices

    $1.35.

That’s the highest price gas reached all year in 1981 throughout the United States.

But when adjusted for inflation, it’s about $4.46, not so dissimilar to today at $4.68.

    A gallon of milk

Milk is actually more affordable now than it was four decades ago.

Throughout 1981 a standard gallon of milk cost Americans $1.83 on average or $6.35 today.

According to Cornell University, the average price of milk during the first four months of 2024 was $4.57.

    Price of a new car

1981 was only the sixth year the iconic Ford F150 was available for purchase with the entry level beginning at $6,765, with top trims reaching $9,681. Adjusted, that’s $23,465.47 to $33,580.08 today.

The same base model 2024 F150 starts at $37,065, and can be optioned well over $100,000.

    Home prices

Remember when a single family home sold for five figures? Neither do we.

In 1981, the average cost of a home on the West Coast was $77,800. Adjusted for inflation, that’s just $269,861.

If you’d like to buy a home now in Echo Park (next to Dodger Stadium), it’ll cost you $1,077,623 according to Zillow.

Prices across the entirety of California are just slightly lower, at $787,000.

    What else happened in 1981?

Here’s a few other things that happened in 1981:

    • January 20 – Ronald Reagan is sworn in as the 40th President of the United States.
    • January 21 – The first DeLorean, best known for its feature in 1985’s cult classic “Back to the Future,” rolls off the production line in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland.
    • April 12 – NASA launches the Columbia Space Shuttle, the first reusable spacecraft to return from orbit.
    • May 11 – Jamaican reggae icon Bob Marley dies at age 36.
    • June 5 – The first officially recognized case of AIDS is reported in Los Angeles, California.
    • July 29 – Prince Charles marries Lady Diana Spencer.
    • August 1 – MTV airs its first broadcast, “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles.
    • December 5 – USC running back Marcus Allen wins the Heisman trophy.

Video taken by Shante Hall showed a whirlwind of dust shot up to the sky during a Pop Warner football game at Etiwanda Creek.

The gusts of wind and dust forced children and adults to close their eyes and duck their heads while some rushed to stop their chairs, bags and hats from flying away.

The National Weather Service also confirmed there was a dust devil at around 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Rancho Cucamonga.

Dust devils typically occur in Arizona as the dust-filled vortices are created by strong surface heating.

Boyle Heights to get Fernando Valenzuela mural as Dodgers head to World Series https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/boyle-heights-fernando-valenzuela-mural-los-angeles-dodgers-world-series/3540832/ 3540832 post 9976364 USA TODAY Sports https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/USATSI_10686975-e1729542703346.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=211,300 Boyle Heights will soon welcome a mural to honor one of the most celebrated Dodgers in history, Fernando Valenzuela.

Robert Vargas, the muralist behind Shohei Ohtani’s mural on the Miyako hotel in Little Tokyo, will begin the Valenzuela mural Tuesday with the goal of finishing it by Nov. 1, the birthday of the Mexican-born pitcher.

“This mural is going to be an iconic mural, an instant landmark that will not only be a great source of pride here for people who grew up watching Fernando, but it allows the children of the future to be able to look at an image and see themselves,” Vargas, a Boyle Heights natives, said.

The mural will be named Fernando Mania Forever, according to Vargas.

“Before Ohtani Mania, there was Fernando Mania,” Vargas said.

While Valenzuela is said to be focusing on his health after he stepped away from his Spanish-language broadcaster duties for the Dodgers early October, the iconic Dodger continued to be an inspiration for Hispanic Angelenos, according to Los Angeles City Councilmember Kevin de León whose district includes Boyle Heights.

“Fernando’s journey from the dusty fields of Mexico to the bright lights of Dodger Stadium showed us what is possible when dedication and passion meet opportunity,” de León said. “Fernando gave the city something to believe in. He brought together Angelenos from every walk of life, and his legend from Nando Mania made us proud not just of the Dodgers but our shared heritage as Angelenos.”

The Dodgers posted a statement on Oct. 2 after reports circulated about the health of one of the team’s most beloved players. Since 2003, Valenzuela has worked for the Dodgers organization as a Spanish-language broadcaster.

“Fernando Valenzuela has stepped away from the Dodgers broadcast booth for the remainder of this year to focus on his health,” the Dodgers said. “He and his family truly appreciate the love and support of fans as he aims to return for the 2025 season, and the have asked for privacy during this time.”

Details regarding the 63-year-old health condition were not included in the statement. He left the broadcast booth during the series between the Dodgers and San Diego Padres on Sept. 24.

Valenzuela is among the Dodgers’ all-time franchise leaders in several categories, ranking fourth in complete games (107), fifth in strikeouts (1,759) and sixth in wins (141). He’s the only player in major league history to the win Rookie of the Year and Cy Young Award in the same season, doing so in the Dodgers’ 1981 World Series campaign.

He won his first eight games in the 1981 season, pitching a shutout in five. That success led to the “Fernandomania” craze and continued in the postseason, when Valenzuela and the Dodgers defeated the Yankees in the World Series. Valenzuela was also on the Dodger team that won the World Series in 1988 over the Oakland As.

The Navajoa, Mexico, native is a member of the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame and the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame. His No. 34 has also been retired by the Mexican Baseball League.

Last year, the City of LA issued a proclamation declaring Aug. 11 as “Fernando Valenzuela Day.” The six-time All-Star’s No. 34 jersey was retired by the team that same year.

‘What about Riverside County?' Turpin children demand change, compensation https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/turpin-children-share-reaction-foster-dad-sentenced-prison-child-abuse/3540622/ 3540622 post 4402980 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2019/09/Turpin_Parents_Plead_Not_Guilty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 After a Perris man was sentenced for seven years in prison for abusing several children who had been previously rescued from their biological parents’ home, the victims Monday demanded change and a financial compensation from Riverside County and a private foster care agency.

The 13 children, who were rescued from the home of their biological parents, David and Louise Turpin, in January 2018 after years of torture, imprisonment and starvation, shared their reaction in a news conference through their attorneys Monday morning after the foster father for several of the children was sentenced to seven years in prison.

65-year-old Marcelino Olguin was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday for child abuse and lewd acts on a child under 14 years old.

Olguin allegedly kissed the victims and told them not to wear undershirts. There were other alleged acts of touching the children, whom the defendants also encouraged to fight, according to court documents.

Olguin’s wife and daughter also admitted to child abuse and were sentenced to probation and a work release program.

As soon as learning the fate of their foster family, the Turpin children asked, “What’s next?” according to their attorney.

“(The Turpin children) were told over and over again, ‘You are safe. You are saved. We will help you. You’ve got to trust us,’” said Elan Zektser, the attorney for the older children. “Then they were placed here with a child molester. They were placed here with child abusers.”

Roger Booth, who represents the four youngest Turpin kids, said Riverside County was responsible to extending the child abuse and trauma for the victims while suggesting more abuse can happen under the current system.

“It shouldn’t have happened,” Booth said. “The responsibility that the County of Riverside Department of Social Services has and the responsibility ChildNet has is far greater because it extends to thousands of kids that they have responsibility over. And if they’re not actively protecting kids that need to be protected, the level of harm that can happen is much much greater than what a single foster family can do.”

In addition to seeking systematic changes within Riverside County’s Department of Social Services, the attorneys want a confidential amount of confidential compensations for the victims.

“How much is it worth? How much would you pay to be put in that situation? Would you be okay with a million bucks for the rest of your life after being abused sexually and physically and emotionally? The answer is no,” said Zektser. “These young adults now need help, and that’s going to cost money, and money changes things.”

In a statement on Monday, a representative for Riverside County said the county severed ties with ChildNet.

“The trauma this family endured is heartbreaking,” the county said in a statement. “We remain committed to their wellbeing and their lifelong journey of healing. We appreciate our County and community partners, who collaborate with us to support this family, and every family, with services and resources.”

“The Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) no longer places children in homes through the agency formerly known as ChildNet,” its statement continued. “DPSS continues to address existing placement gaps and expand safe, available placements. Recently, the County invested more than $30 million to purchase and staff a therapeutic campus for children with complex needs awaiting placement.”

The foster family’s abuse was an extension of what the Turpin children had endured at the hands of their own parents.

David Turpin, now 63, and Louise Turpin, now 56, were each sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison in 2019.

The couple operated what prosecutors and investigators described as a “house of horrors,” keeping some of the children caged or chained most times of the day, forcing them to subsist on peanut butter sandwiches and burritos, making them sleep up to 20 hours daily, and allowing them to shower only once a year.

The parents also engaged in repeated physical abuse, resulting in injuries. The conditions were uncovered in January 2018 when one of the Turpin girls, then-17-year-old Jordan Turpin, escaped through a window and called 911.

Kaiser mental health workers strike across SoCal https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/kaiser-mental-health-workers-poised-to-strike-across-socal/3540557/ 3540557 post 4568066 NBCLA https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2019/09/20191216-kaiser.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,167 Nearly 2,400 mental health workers at Kaiser Permanente facilities went on strike Monday amid contract talks and allegations of a “broken” system of care, while Kaiser officials say the union has been “slow walking” the negotiation process and planned to strike before labor talks even began.

“This is about equity for mental health care,” Jessica Rentz, a Kaiser therapist in Fontana, said in a statement released by the National Union of Healthcare Workers. “We want to be with our patients, not on a picket line, but we can’t keep working in a system that treats mental health care like an assembly line job and denies us the time and resources to provide the care we know our patients need.”

According to the union, the impacted workers include psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, addiction medicine counselors, licensed clinical counselors and marriage and family therapists who “provide behavioral health care for Kaiser’s 4.8 million members in hospitals, clinics and medical offices [and] homecare settings from San Diego to Bakersfield.”

The union’s contract with Kaiser expired Sept. 30.

The labor dispute comes one year after Kaiser reached a $50 million settlement with state regulators who said the health care giant’s mental health care system lacked adequate staffing that caused lapses in access to care for patients.

Kaiser officials said the organization has invested more than $1 billion since 2020 to expand its mental health capabilities in California, including hiring more therapists, the addition of resources and reductions in wait times for patients.

The union, however, says shortages are still persistent in Southern California, insisting Kaiser has about one therapist for every 3,000 Kaiser members, compared to one per 2,000 in Northern California. That ratio has limited the time available to therapists to respond to patient calls and emails, to develop treatment plans and prepare for appointments, leading to burnout and causing newly hired therapists to leave their jobs, the union contends.

The union contends that one-fourth of the 1,508 mental health professionals hired by Kaiser’s Southern California region between January 2021 and September 2024 have already left their positions.

Kaiser officials said in a statement that the health care system is committed to continued negotiations “until this deal is done.” But it said the union has been focused on a strike since the beginning of talks, and has been “slow walking the negotiation process, including on the very issues the union has identified as key to reaching a contract.”

“It is apparent that their strategy all along has been to move to a strike,” according to a Kaiser statement. “They have been threatening to strike since before we began bargaining in July and have operated without a sense of urgency, declining to accept or counter the strong proposals Kaiser Permanente has put on the table. Most concerning, the union presented a proposal that could result in a full-time therapist spending 40% or more of their work week not seeing patients.”

According to Kaiser, it has presented the union with an offer that includes an 18% wage increase over four years, and also “enhances the comprehensive benefits our mental health professionals enjoy plus provides therapists more non-patient time for planning and preparation.”

“Today, some of the employees represented by the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) are choosing to walk away from their patients at various Kaiser Permanente facilities in Southern California to take part in an open-ended strike called by union leaders,” Kaiser said in a statement released Monday.

“All Kaiser Permanente members will continue to have timely access to individual therapy appointments during the strike. Patients have the opportunity to be seen by a professional in our extensive network of highly qualified, licensed therapists if their regular provider chooses to take part in the strike. Where necessary, we are contacting patients and offering options that meet their needs.”

Kaiser said the strike is “entirely unnecessary and unfortunately not surprising. NUHW leaders have been threatening to strike since before we began bargaining in July. The union has been slow-walking negotiations, despite the strong proposals Kaiser Permanente has put on the table. The union’s proposals at the table have been overreaching and unreasonable.

“The union isn’t calling for more time to care for patients. It is demanding more money for therapists to spend less time seeing patients. A key issue is how much time the union wants to take therapists away from direct patient care. The union is proposing that full-time therapists increase the amount of time they are not seeing patients to nearly half of their time — at least 19 hours a week. This is unacceptable and would significantly decrease access to appointments for mental health care for our patients.”

Union officials said they are seeking an agreement similar to that reached with Kaiser mental health workers in Northern California, who went on strike for 10 weeks two years ago.

The union is asking that Kaiser guarantee full-time therapists seven hours per week for patient care duties such as responding to patient calls and emails, developing treatment plans, communicating with social service agencies and preparing for appointments. Union officials said Kaiser is guaranteeing only four hours per week.

The union also wants raises to put the workers on par with non-mental health care employees, who the union claims earn 40% more. It is also calling for a restoration of pensions that the union says were eliminated for newly hired mental health professionals a decade ago, even though pensions are still in place for other workers ranging from doctors to janitors.

World Series tickets are how much? Yankees-Dodgers seat prices are soaring https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/sports/mlb/world-series-tickets-yankees-dodgers/3540794/ 3540794 post 9975306 Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/GettyImages-2178727678.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 The matchup between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers has fans clamoring for World Series tickets, and that means prices are soaring.

The morning after the Dodgers trounced the New York Mets and earned their spot in the Fall Classic, tickets for the World Series were going for at least $1,000, depending on the game.

Game 1 of the World Series is Friday, Oct. 25, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. According to SeatGeek, the cheapest single ticket goes for $1,034.

Game 2 of the series stays in Los Angeles for the following night, Saturday, Oct. 26, where tickets actually jumped a couple hundred dollars. The cheapest single tickets runs for $1,209.

The next three games of the World Series will be in New York, if the series makes it to a fifth game. The cheapest ticket for Game 3 is $1,385; Game 4 is $1,110; Game 5 is also $1,110.

Although Game 6 and Game 7 are not guaranteed, those matchups have some of the priciest seats. Game 6, which is back in Los Angeles, goes for $1,359 and Game 7 has its cheapest ticket at $1,297.

And to be clear, all of those “cheap” tickets are for the so-called nosebleed seats.

Some of the most expensive tickets in the stadiums are down behind home plate. On Friday, Dodger Stadium tickets behind home plate were selling for between $15,000 and $20,000

The Dodgers hold on to defeat the Mets 10-5 in Game 6 to advance to World Series against Yankees https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/sports/the-dodgers-hold-on-to-defeat-the-mets-10-5-in-game-6-to-advance-to-world-series-against-yankees/3540285/ 3540285 post 9974655 MediaNews Group via Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/GettyImages-2179001385.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,211 The last time this happened, not a single player on the Dodgers roster was alive. Manager Dave Roberts was just nine years old. But when you put on the uniform of the Los Angeles Dodgers, history follows you, it’s inescapable.

Now, history is upon them. For the 12th time it will be the Dodgers versus the New York Yankees in the World Series.

The Dodgers journey to baseball’s dream destination was unconventional and fraught with obstacles. They needed three bullpen games and every single player on the 26-man roster to get here.

One of those players was utility man Tommy Edman.

Edman hit a home run and knocked in four runs as the Dodgers defeated the New York Mets 10-5 in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series to clinch their 22nd pennant in franchise history.

“This is what you always dream about as a little kid,” said Edman, who was named the MVP of the series. “I get to play in the World Series, and I get to play in it for the Dodgers against the Yankees. It’s pretty surreal.”

The celebration in the Dodgers’ clubhouse after punching their ticket to the 2024 World Series was one of relief and exultation. In a vacuum, they could have cared less about who they play next, they were ecstatic to get past the “OMG” Mets and back to their first Fall Classic since 2020.

“We’re going to celebrate tonight, as we should,” said Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts after the game. “But after that, I think the whole world was looking forward to this potential matchup between the Yankees and the Dodgers, this showdown.”

For Edman, the winner of the NLCS MVP, after finishing 2-for4 with a double, home run, and four RBI in the game, it will be his first time playing in the World Series.

“I kept getting up with guys on base and had a lot of opportunities to drive runs in,” said Edman of his record-tying 11 RBI during the series. “Playing in the World Series is a dream come true.”

For two-time MVP Shohei Ohtani, it’s his first World Series after languishing a few miles up the freeway in Anaheim for the last six seasons.

“I feel like I’ve finally arrived at this stage,” said Ohtani through an interpreter. “The goal was to get this far. I pictured myself getting this far. So just to be able to play on this stage with this team, I’m just so glad to be here.”

For Teoscar Hernandez, who had the biggest smile than anyone in the postgame clubhouse, it punctuates a risky decision in the offseason to sign with the Dodgers, validating that choice as he will also play in his first World Series.

“It paid off,” Hernández said of his decision to sign with the Dodgers. “I’m the kind of guy who like to take risk, and this was definitely a risk, but I made the decision based off of which team gave me the best chance to win, and now I’m playing in the World Series. This is a dream come true.”

Sunday’s Game 6 nerve-racking victory came from all angles and involved almost all the players on the Dodgers roster.

Edman, who can play centerfield, shortstop, and second base knocked in the first two runs of the game with a two-out, two-run double down the left field line in the bottom of the first inning.

Edman, who may have been the biggest acquisition for the Dodgers during a flurry of trade deadline moves that also featured Game 1 winner Jack Flaherty and Game you 6 opener Michael Kopech, extended the lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning.

“I never imagined once we acquired him, that he’d be hitting fourth in a postseason game,” said Roberts of his cleanup hitter in Game 6. “But I trust him. The guys on the team trust him. He’s made huge defensive plays for us and had huge hits. We are just very fortunate to have a player like Tommy.”

Will Smith followed with a two-run homer that put the Dodgers ahead 6-1, and sent the 52,674 blue towel waving fans into a frenzy. That was the moment they collectively began counting outs.

The Dodgers deployed the full arsenal of their bullpen by rolling out seven different relievers to cobble together 27 outs.

Ben Casparius, who started the season in Double-A, was the only reliever to throw more than one inning of scoreless relief.

Ironically, it was veteran reliever Blake Treinen, that recorded the final six outs to send the Dodgers to the World Series. Treinen, who played a major role in relief during the 2020 title run, was not able to participate in the postseason the last three. Finally healthy, and back to full strength, he put the Boys in Blue on his back when they needed him most.

“I’ve been through a lot,” said Treinen reflecting on his own journey since winning the World Series inside the Bubble in 2020. “I’ve done a lot of digging on who I was as a person, and who God created me to be. To be back here, and to have the opportunity to just play at this level, there’s just so much to be grateful for.”

The Mets left 13 more men on base in a series full of missed opportunities. On Sunday, they stranded the bases loaded not once, but twice during the game. All six games of the series were decided by four runs or more, the only time that’s happened in history.

Now it’s time for a different team from New York to take center stage and try their hand at beating the Dodgers, the team that finished with the best record in baseball during the regular season.

Cue the highlights from the previous 11 times the Dodgers and Yankees met in the World Series. Names like Pee Wee Reese, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, and Reggie Jackson, will now be joined by Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, Mookie Betts, Giancarlo Stanton, Juan Soto, Freddie Freeman, Gerrit Cole, and Walker Buehler in the rivalry’s lore.

Surely the Dodgers will bring members of the 1981 championship team that defeated the Yankees in six games the last time the two teams faced off. Because for legends like Dusty Baker, Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Fernando Valenzuela, Ron Cey, Pedro Guerrero, Rick Monday, Bill Russell, Steve Yeager, Mike Scioscia, Dave Stewart, Bob Welch and the rest of the heroes of that squad, a Dodgers-Yankees World Series means everything.

But for a city that hasn’t seen their team clinch a berth in the World Series at Dodger Stadium since 1988, and didn’t get to celebrate with a parade in 2000, Sunday’s victory means so much.

It means the Dodgers are back in the World Series, against the hated New York Yankees of all teams. It means a Fall Classic for the ages and the stuff of storytelling dreams. It means the ghosts of Dodgers and Yankees pasts will finally have company when the history books are read centuries from now.

Game 1 of the World Series is scheduled for Friday night at Dodger Stadium.

Dodgers face uphill battle against Mets in Game 6 without Freddie Freeman, Michael Kopech to start for LA https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/sports/dodgers-face-uphill-battle-against-mets-in-game-6-without-freddie-freeman-michael-kopech-to-start-for-la/3540254/ 3540254 post 9974311 Los Angeles Times via Getty Imag https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/GettyImages-2178438152.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 The stakes couldn’t be higher for the Los Angeles Dodgers as they gear up for Game 6 of the National League Championship Series on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers hold a 3-2 lead over the New York Mets, just one win away from clinching their record-setting 25th National League pennant. But it won’t come easy—not with two crucial players, All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman and second baseman Gavin Lux, absent from the lineup.

Freeman, who has been a linchpin in the Dodgers’ offense all season, is sidelined with a high-ankle sprain. The team made the call to rest him for another day, a decision that could reverberate throughout should they lose on Sunday.

Lux, another key piece, also won’t be in the lineup. Lux, a left-handed hitter likely would have been out of the lineup anyway against left-hander Sean Manaea. But Freeman, who faced Manaea in Game 2, is a little bit of a surprise even though he went 0-for-5 in that game.

Switch-hitter Tommy Edman is back in the cleanup spot, just as he was in the 10-2 victory in Game 4 of the series. Chris Taylor starts at second base.

How Will the Dodgers Handle Manaea Without Freeman and Lux?

Sean Manaea, the Mets’ southpaw, is no stranger to the Dodgers. He handed them one of their worst losses of the postseason in Game 2 of the series, allowing just two with seven strikeouts, across five innings.

With Freeman and Lux out of the picture, the Dodgers will have to depend on Max Muncy, who will slide over to first base and bat fifth. While Muncy brings a potent left-handed bat, he homered off Manaea in Game 2.

Freeman’s absence is monumental not just for his bat, but for his leadership and ability to work counts. He thrives in high-pressure situations and can change the course of a game with one swing. Losing him is a massive blow, as he provides a layer of protection in the lineup that makes pitchers work harder for every out, and his defense at first base is elite.

Without him, the Dodgers lose a player who has been a consistent source of offense all season—especially against left-handers. Freeman slashed .290/.395/.520 against southpaws during the regular season, a level of production the Dodgers can’t simply replicate.

Lux’s absence only compounds the issue. While not the slugger Freeman is, Lux has emerged as a key contributor, especially in situational hitting. His speed on the basepaths and ability to turn singles into doubles put pressure on opposing pitchers. In Game 2, the Dodgers were flat offensively, and losing two of their spark plugs against a pitcher who’s already dominated them is not ideal.

Both players should be available off the bench to pinch-hit later in the game.

    The Bullpen Strategy

With Michael Kopech starting Game 6, manager Dave Roberts is leaning heavily on his bullpen—a strategy that has both its risks and rewards.

Kopech has been lights out in the postseason, giving up no runs in his six appearances, and he’ll be tasked with setting the tone early. But the Dodgers will need their entire bullpen to be sharp, especially without the cushion of a full-strength lineup.

Roberts’ decision to start Kopech in a bullpen game is an interesting one, given that Kopech has spent the second half of the season as the Dodgers closer.  Since coming to the Dodgers in a midseason trade from the Chicago White Sox, he has been stellar.

In his 24 regular-season appearances with the Dodgers, he posted a 1.13 ERA, striking out 29 in 24 innings. He’s earned the trust of Roberts, and rightfully so—his electric fastball and devastating slider could be just what the Dodgers need to neutralize the Mets early.

That said, relying on a parade of relievers comes with its own set of challenges. The Dodgers’ bullpen has been strong all year, but in a do-or-die game, fatigue can be a factor. If Kopech can give them two solid innings, it will be up to a mix of arms, including Evan Phillips, Blake Treinen, and Ryan Brasier, to hold the fort against a dangerous Mets lineup that includes Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso.

The Dodgers are 1-for-1 this postseason in bullpen games. Essentially, Game 6 comes down to a coin toss. Here’s hoping it’s heads.

When is the last day to register to vote in California? https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/how-to-register-to-vote-in-california/3540192/ 3540192 post 6449373 Karla Rendon-Alvarez https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2021/09/I-Voted-sticker-San-Diego-Registrar-of-Voters-3-e1654109007699.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 With the Nov. 5 general election just a few weeks away, California residents may want to check their voter registration status to ensure they’re able to vote in the Presidential Election.

If you think you may have registered to vote before, or want to make changes to your voting preferences, check your registration status here.

    Decision 2024:

    Plan Your Vote

If you’ve recently moved or changed your name, you must re-register to vote by completing a new voter registration form.

Either way, it’s a good idea to ensure the Registrar of Voters has your correct mailing address.

If you have not previously registered, you can do so here:

Secretary of State - Voting In California

To register to vote in California, you must be:

    • A U.S. citizen
    • A California resident
    • At least 18 years old on or before the next election
    • Not in state or federal prison for a felony conviction
    • Not declared mentally incompetent by court action

The last day to register online or by mail to vote in the state of California is Oct. 21. If you miss the deadline, don’t worry. There’s still a way to vote in the November election. More details below and here.

Can I still register to vote if I miss the deadline?

Luckily, for those who miss out on registering to vote during the window, the state of California allows residents to register using what’s called conditional voter registration up until and on Election Day, but it must be done in person.

If you meet the criteria to become a registered voter, go to the Registrar’s office at 5600 Overland Ave., San Diego, or any vote center to register and to vote using a provisional ballot. Rest assured, your vote will still be counted once you’ve been verified as a registered voter.

You will also be registered to vote in any future elections.

Santa Ana winds to drive up temps, fire danger in SoCal https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/santa-ana-winds-to-drive-up-temps-fire-danger-in-socal/3539937/ 3539937 post 5853540 Robert Laberge/Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2021/02/WindGeneric.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A wind advisory remains in effect until at least 3 p.m. Saturday in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys as well as the Santa Monica Mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

“Santa Ana wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph with isolated gusts to 50 mph will continue through Saturday, strongest in the valley hills and mountain peaks,” NWS forecasters said. “Relative humidity will fall into the 5% to 15% percent range …, with very poor overnight recoveries …. Such an environment will support rapid fire growth and erratic fire behavior.”

North-to-northeast wind gusts also increase the possibility of downed power lines and trees.

“#SantaAnaWinds in full swing!” NWS officials noted on social media. “Use caution with any source of spark or flame, any new fire will grow rapidly! Critical Fire weather conditions expected for the mountains and valleys of LA and Ventura Counties.”

Southern California Edison, meanwhile, warned customers in wind-and fire-prone areas that they could have their power cut as a precautionary measure aimed at preventing wildfires.

As is typical with Santa Ana winds, the gusts will peak in the late morning and early afternoon, then subside during the evening hours, the NWS said.

The combination of gusting winds and low humidity prompted the NWS to issue a red flag warning of critical fire danger that will be in effect through 6 p.m. Saturday. The warning will affect the Santa Clarita and San Fernando valleys, the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, Calabasas, the San Gabriel Mountains and the 5 and 14 Freeway corridors.

The winds should taper off by Sunday, “but the combination of lingering offshore flow and a warming air mass should keep temperatures quite warm for coast and valleys, possibly close to 90 in the warmer valleys and low to mid-80s at the coast,” forecasters said.

Students embrace their Hispanic heritage through music at Santa Ana High School https://www.nbclosangeles.com/local-2/students-embrace-their-hispanic-heritage-through-music-at-santa-ana-high-school/3539731/ 3539731 post 9972385 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/Frias-HHM.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Regional Mexican music, globalized by music icons such as Peso Pluma and Fuerza Regida, has made its way into Santa Ana High School, influencing music students with Hispanic heritage.

Palomazo Academy is an after school program in Orange County on its fourth year operating. The program offers students access to instructors and instruments at no cost, creating a unique space for members to embrace with their culture.

“This reminds me of where I came from and the culture and the people, ” said Andres Aguilar, member of Palomazo Academy.

The club has over 15 members and is fully run by upper class students, who said they enjoy sharing their culture with their mentees.

“Whatever it is, we have to get them comfortable. And then if they want to learn a song we teach them that song but we teach them step by step,” said Oscar Lopez, a member and senior at Santa Ana High School.

Although Regional Mexican music can be associated with lyrics about drugs and violence, students are encouraged to use the rhythms to build a deeper connection to their culture and family, according to music intructor Marina Casares.

The club’s mission was successful as students believe it has become a bridge between generations and has helped them embrace their roots.

“It’s what my family likes to listen to too and they like it when I play this kind of music at home,” said Aguilar

In a school setting, culture can be overlooked but the club hopes to give students a voice to embrace their heritage.

“Having this allows the students to feel heard, feel safe, it’s a safe place where they can enjoy their music, they can enjoy their craft but also feel supported,” Casares said.

Dodgers unable to overcome early deficit, as Mets stave off elimination with 12-6 victory in Game 5 of NLCS. LA leads series 3-2 https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/sports/dodgers-mets-nlcs-game-five/3539671/ 3539671 post 9972201 Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/GettyImages-2179439333.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,203 The New York Mets love it when people count them out. So in a season of miraculous comebacks, what’s one more?

The Mets offense broke out in a season-saving elimination game, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 12-6 in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series on Thursday night at Citi Field.

“If we come back from this, then it’s going to be a heck of a story,” said Mets’ outfielder Brandon Nimmo of the possibility of overcoming a 3-1 deficit. “We’re going to be adding to that whole Grimace, OMG stuff.”

Similar to sharks circling in the ocean, the Dodgers smelled blood in the water after back-to-back blowout victories over the Mets in Games 3 and 4.

Rather than go with a bullpen game to line up two of their best starters for when the series shifts back to Los Angeles for Games 6 and 7, they opted for Game 1 starter Jack Flaherty, who threw seven dominant innings against New York last Sunday.

The move backfired, as Flaherty was a shell of his Sunday self, allowing eight runs on eight hits in just three short innings.

“They made some adjustments and did a good job. I let the game speed up on me. I didn’t make the adjustments in-game that would normally get made,” said Flaherty of what went wrong on Thursday night. “All I had to do was be average and we’re in this game. But now we have to regroup, and go back to LA.”

After his gem in Game 1, Flaherty never expected to pitch a dud in a potential closeout game.

“That’s what makes the postseason so interesting, facing a team two times in the span of five days. They wanted to get back for what happened in Game 1, and I wanted to continue rolling,” said Flaherty of Game 1 compared to Game 5. “But that’s not how it went. They were able to do a good job and tip your cap to them. It’s frustrating. Today sucks, but we have another one, and we get to go back to LA and get greeted by our fans.”

Pete Alonso, who didn’t have a home run or an RBI in the series entering the game, heaved his aching teammates off the ropes just when it appeared like the Polar Bear was going lead them into a long winter.

Alonso, who could have played in his final game at Citi Field with the Mets, threw the first punch when he blasted a three-run home run to center field off Flaherty in the first inning.

“I’m just really happy I could come through right there for the fellas,” said Alonso of his first inning homer. “I’m just so happy because this group is so special. And I’m happy that we get to live to fight another day and play another game of baseball together.”

The sputtering Mets offense, that had only produced two runs at home in the series, awoke from their hibernation with 12 runs in Game 5.

Alonso wasn’t the only one with a Herculean performance for the Mets on Thursday. Francisco Lindor was 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored. Starling Marte was 4-for-5 with three doubles, and catcher Francisco Alvarez broke out of his slump with three hits in total.

“It feels good, not only because I had a good game, but also because the team won,” Marte said of his three doubles and the Mets victory. “As long as I’m giving my 100 percent, the team’s producing. Yeah, it’s definitely exciting. As long as I’m on base I feel like we can have success.”

Entering the game the Mets looked like a junky old car that was driving on three flat tires and slowly running out of gas. Their struggling offense had them on the brink of elimination and they were forced to start David Peterson, who up until this point in the postseason had only pitched out of the pen.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers looked like a Ferrari F1 race car. Seemingly firing on all cylinders, cruising to the finish line, poised to advance to their first World Series since 2020 in the bubble in Texas.

Yet somehow the roles were reversed. By the end of the third inning it was 8-1 Mets. After the fourth it was 10-2 New York, the same score they lost by less than 24 hours earlier.

“We’re capable of putting together games like this, especially when 1 through 9, we’re clicking, we’re not chasing,” said Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza. “We showed up today. We needed that. Obviously Pete setting the tone in the first inning was important, and we just continued to add on.”

Andy Pages tried to put the Dodgers on his back with not one, but two home runs in the game.

The 23-year-old rookie became the youngest player to a have a multi-homer game in Dodgers franchise history when he belted a solo shot in the fourth, and a three-run shot in the top of the fifth.

“I feel great about what I did at the plate,” said Pages through a translator. “I had a great game, but the team didn’t win and that’s the only thing I care about.”

Mookie Betts added a homer of his own, his fourth of the postseason, but it was too little, too late for the Dodgers.

“We’re going to play 27 outs no matter what the score is,” said Betts of his 6th inning homer. “It doesn’t really matter what I did. A loss is a loss. I’m not here for personal accolades. We just have to find a way to win a ball game. We’ve got to turn the page and get ready for the next one.”

Baseball is a strange sport. One minute, the Mets looked dead on arrival, things were dire as they could be after their second straight blowout loss in Game 4. But the 2024 Mets thrive on dire.

After getting swept by the Dodgers in late-May, they fell to 22-33 and fell six games back of a wild-card berth. They still made the playoffs.

In the Wild Card round against the Brewers, they were two outs away from their season ending before Alonso’s three-run homer saved them in Milwaukee.

Then in the NLDS, they rallied with five runs in the eighth inning in the opener at Philadelphia, and Lindor hit a go-ahead grand slam to give them the lead in the sixth inning of Game 4.

“It’s taught us a lot about our character and who we are in our identity as a team. We’re a super resilient bunch, and we’ve had to pretty much answer the bell all year,” Alonso said. “The one word I can think of for the 2024 Mets other than Grimace is resiliency. That’s just who we are.”

The series now shifts back to Los Angeles for Game 6 on Sunday, October 20th, with first pitch scheduled for 5:08PM PT on FOX.

Santa Ana Measure DD: Should non-citizens be able to vote? https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/santa-ana-measure-dd-should-non-citizens-vote/3539732/ 3539732 post 9972175 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/santa-ana.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Among Santa Ana’s population of 310,000, more than 20% of them are non-U.S. citizens.

A proposal for the November election seeks to allow non-citizens to vote in the municipal elections.

    What would Measure DD do?

If passed, the Santa Ana City Charter would be amended to allow non-citizens to vote in all Santa Ana municipal elections by November 2028.

The passage of Measure DD would also mean Santa Ana becoming the first city in the state to allow non-U.S. citizens to vote in municipal elections.

    What supporters say

Proponents say Measure DD is a way to expand democracy.

Jonathan Hernandez, one of the Santa Ana councilmembers, said many of the non-citizens of Santa Ana are already contributing to the city. Measure DD would allow them another way to play their parts.

“Many of these residents are taxpayers. Many are homeowners, business owners. They have families in our city,” Hernandez said. “They have been contributing to OC making it the home it is.”

    What opponents say

Those opposed to Measure DD say the proposal would violate the U.S. Constitution.

Critics also argue city leaders rushed to get Measure DD on the ballot without much research or thought.

If passed, the city would open itself to lawsuits and litigation, according to Santa Ana City Councilmember David Penaloza, who estimates the legal challenges would cost the city at least half a million dollars.

If Measure DD is approved, the city clerk would be required to run city elections, not the Orange County Registrar of voters.

“As a city we have to create an elections department. We have to hire an election official. We have to hire staff,  buy equipment,” Penaloza said. “What does that mean for a city that in the next four years is going to be in the red in the tens of millions of dollars?

Shohei Ohtani helps revitalize Little Tokyo, prompting free sake bombs for fans https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/shohei-ohtani-helps-revitalize-little-tokyo-prompting-free-sake-bombs-fans/3539703/ 3539703 post 9972116 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/shohei.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all After Shohei Ohtani signed with the Dodgers last December, Little Tokyo has seen a resurgence for many small businesses.

Don Tahara, who owns Far Bar in Little Tokyo, said business has gotten busier especially after he decided to give away free sake bombs for every home run hit by Ohtani.

He said that when Ohtani hit three home runs in one game against the Miami Marlins on Sept. 19, they almost ran out of sake.

“The people in Little Tokyo obviously have a lot of pride in Shohei doing well and a lot of our customers who are not Dodger fans are now Dodger fans and so it’s good for the Dodgers, it’s good for Little Tokyo,” said Tahara.

Just across the street from the bar, the giant 150-foot mural of the Dodger superstar by Robert Vargas also has helped revitalize the area.

“(Businesses) been so hard hit during COVID,” Vargas said. “Helping contribute to the commerce of the area … was part of the intention as well. It’s an incredible thing to look at.”

Tahara also said after the mural was complete, more people are visiting Little Tokyo, which means for patrons for Far Bar.

The mural appeared to create a sense of renewal for the community as well, according to Vargas.

“This is Dodger town now. I brought this project to the Miyako Hotel as a way of allied ship and bringing unity and bridging cultures here in Little Tokyo,” said Vargas, a Boyle Heights native who grew up across the bridge from Little Tokyo.

On Monday, he will begin painting a mural of former Dodger player Fernando Valenzuela in Boyle Heights, set to unveil on Nov. 1.

Lancaster child dies at friend's home, sparking investigation https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/lancaster-child-dies-friends-home-sparking-investigation/3539689/ 3539689 post 9972015 KNN News https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/lancaster.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A death investigation was underway in Lancaster Friday after a boy died while visiting a friend Thursday afternoon.

Deputies initially responded to a call about a gunshot victim in the 44000 block of Dahlia Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The responding deputies found the boy with a gunshot wound and tried to save him until fire department officials arrived. But the boy died from his injuries at the friend’s house, the Sheriff’s Department said.

A firearm was found from the house.

    No one was arrested.

Neighbors told NBC Los Angeles that they have seen an older boy – around age 11 – living at home with a woman who they believed to be his mother. The mother and son have lived at the Dahlia Street house for about a year.

Authorities did not say how the boy came in contact with the gun and whether it was an accident or intentional.

The Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital  said 22 million children live in homes with at least one firearm across the U.S. 75% of those children know where the guns are stored.

Dodger Stadium World Series tickets reach five figures https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/sports/dodgers-world-series-tickets/3539614/ 3539614 post 3292169 Jayne Kamin-Oncea/Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2019/09/Dodgers-Postseason-Ticket-Prices.png?fit=300,191&quality=85&strip=all Dodgers World Series tickets went on sale Thursday morning, and they didn’t last long.

Despite the $800 price tag, tickets sold out within the day for all four prospective home games at Dodger Stadium.

On the second hand market, $1,081 is the cheapest price of entry as of Friday afternoon. Those seats are located on the upper deck just right of the right field foul pole.

Sitting anywhere behind the outfield ranges from $1,392 at the lowest, to $1,733 in prime home run territory.

And, to sit directly behind home plate? Between $15,000 and $20,000.

The Dodgers did not opt to advertise or make a formal announcement of the ticket sale. The team instead sent an email to previous ticket buyers and shared the news over social media.

The Dodgers website does note tickets bought with the intention of resale “are subject to cancellation and refund” by the team.

The Dodgers currently lead the Mets 3-1 in the National League Championship Series, a best-of-seven series. If the Dodgers beat the Mets at Citi Field Friday, the boys in blue will then face the Yankees or the Guardians in the World Series.

The Yankees currently lead that series 2-1. If both leading teams were to win their series, it would be the first time since 1981 the Dodgers and Yankees have met in the World Series.

Last year, the cheapest Game 1 ticket between the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks sold at $451 for standing-room only. Sit down seats jumped to $774 at the lowest.

If the Dodgers do not make the World Series, all ticket sales will be refunded.

Perris foster dad sentenced to 7 years in prison for abusing Turpin children https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/perris-foster-dad-sentenced-7-years-prison-abusing-turpin-children-riverside-county/3539595/ 3539595 post 4686677 Pinilla, Krystalle (206543960) https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2019/09/tlmd-turpin-viernes-0012.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,166 A Riverside County man was sentenced Friday to seven years in prison for abusing foster children who had been previously tortured and imprisoned by their biological parents, David and Louise Turpin.

Marcelino Olguin of Perris will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life after serving his seven-year sentence.

The 65-year-old pleaded guilty in September to multiple counts of lewd acts on a child as well as false imprisonment.

His wife, Rosa, and daughter, Lennys, pleaded guilty to child cruelty.

Rosa Olguin was sentenced to 120 days in county jail to be served in a work release program, and four years of formal probation.

Lennys Olguin was sentenced to 150 days in county jail to be served in a work release program, and four years of formal probation.

“Today’s sentencing marks a significant step in delivering justice to the victims who endured unimaginable abuse,” Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin said in a statement. “These children were placed in a position of vulnerability after surviving intense trauma, only to be further exploited by someone who was entrusted with their care.”

The Olguin family was assigned to take care of the children of David and Louise Turpin, who were sentenced to life for abusing their 13 biological children for years. The torture included starving, beating, imprisonment with shackling some of the kids.

The children were rescued in 2018 after one of them called authorities for help. The Turpin children were between 2 and 29 years old at the time of the rescue.

Six of the Turpin children also filed a lawsuit against Riverside County and a private foster care agency called ChildNet after their siblings were rescued from the Olguin households.

The suits alleged the foster agency knew the family was unfit to be foster parents because of “a prior history of abusing and neglecting children who had been placed in their care” and failed to act once they were alerted to the allegations of abuse.

Man charged after discovery of body in ‘makeshift grave' in Riverside backyard https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/riverside-murder-body-backyard/3539499/ 3539499 post 365245 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2019/09/crime-tape-generic-edit.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A man arrested earlier this week after the discovery of human remains in the backyard of his Riverside home has been charged with murder.

Officers responded to a home in the 8700 block of Sylvan Drive, in the Arlanza neighborhood, after a resident disappeared for several days. According to the police report, neighborhood resident Richard Thomas Martinez made statements claiming he killed his roommate during the investigation. Martinez was detained, and a search of the property revealed a potential crime scene in the backyard.

Officers deployed cadaver dogs, who alerted them to freshly disturbed soil in the backyard. Police say as detectives began digging, they found human remains in freshly disturbed dirt.

The Riverside Sheriff-Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 31-year-old Bradley Minder, of Riverside.

Detectives arrested 48-year-old Martinez. He was later booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for murder, and is currently being held without bail.

Police say the men, who were roommates, had an altercation ending in the suspect killing Minder before burying his body in the backyard of their home. Details about the altercation were not immediately available.

Martinez was charged with murder, according to the county prosecutor’s office. His first court appearance was scheduled for Friday afternoon.
