Chicken recalled over listeria risk sold at Trader Joe's, Aldi, HEB and more https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/chicken-recalled-over-listeria-risk-sold-at-trader-joes-aldi-heb-and-more/3536184/ 3536184 post 9961758 Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/241015-chicken-getty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Millions of pounds of ready-to-eat meat products, including chicken and turkey have been recalled due to possible listeria contamination.

The recalled foods, produced by BrucePac, a pre-cooked meat producer, were sold at major retailers nationwide like Aldi, Trader Joe’s, HEB and Walmart, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The meat products included in the recall were produced between June 19, 2024, and Oct. 8, 2024, the FSIS says. The products were distributed nationwide to stores, restaurants and other institutions.

In a statement in response to the recall, BrucePac said: “After learning that ready-to-eat chicken tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, we stopped production and immediately recalled all products that may have been affected. We are working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to notify consumers and contact the food companies and distributors to whom we sold the recalled products.”

Ready-to-eat meat recall 2024

The FSIS first alerted consumers to the recall on Oct. 9, 2024.

During routine testing, the agency discovered Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that causes listeria infections, was present in ready-to-eat poultry products from BrucePac. Further testing traced the source of the bacteria back to BrucePac ready-to-eat chicken, the FSIS says.

The FSIS subsequently updated its list of recalled products on Oct. 10 and Oct. 11 to include more products.

There haven’t been any illnesses associated with the recall, but the FSIS is “concerned that some product may be available for use in restaurants, institutions and other establishments,” the alert says. It’s also possible that those other institutions used the ready-to-eat poultry in products that are still on shelves or in consumers’ homes.

If you have any products included in the recall, you should not eat them. Instead, throw them away or return them to where you purchased the products.

Meat recall list: Which products are affected?

The recall now includes more than 200 different ready-to-eat chicken and turkey products that amount to about 10 million pounds of recalled meat. Here is the USDA’s full list of recalled products with photos of the product labels.

The products were sold in multiple major grocery stores, including:

Listeria symptoms

Listeria is an infection caused by bacteria. When listeria infects the intestines, it causes gastrointestinal symptoms similar to other foodborne illnesses, such as diarrhea and vomiting, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explain.

Intestinal listeria infections usually start within 24 hours of eating the contaminated food. The symptoms are typically mild and resolve within three days, the CDC says.

Some people who get an intestinal listeria infection go on to develop a more severe invasive infection as well, meaning the bacteria has spread beyond the gut.

Invasive listeria is especially concerning for people who are pregnant, newborn babies, older adults and people who have weakened immune systems, the CDC says. In pregnant people, invasive listeria can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery and stillbirth. The illness can also cause a life-threatening infection in the newborn.

The signs of a invasive listeria infection in pregnant people include fever and flu-like symptoms, such as fatigue and muscle aches, according to the CDC.

Other people might also experience:

  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Seizures

If you have symptoms of a listeria infection and may have eaten contaminated food, you should contact your health care provider.

Fisher-Price recalls more than 2 million infant swings after 5 deaths reported https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/fisher-price-recalls-snuga-infant-swing-deaths/3532642/ 3532642 post 9950637 Fisher-Price https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/fisher-price-snuga.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Fisher-Price announced on Thursday that more than two million Fisher-Price Snuga Swings have been recalled.

The Snuga Swing, which is an infant swing with a front-to-back and side-to-side motion, has a total of 21 models that were all recalled due to a suffocation hazard. Between 2012 and 2022, five deaths were reported involving infants ages 1 to 3 months old when the product was used for sleep.

Customers are encouraged to immediately remove both the headrest (by cutting the tether) and the body support insert from the seat pad before continuing to use the swing. Fisher-Price will also give a $25 refund to those who remove and destroy the headrest and body support insert, following these instructions.

Fisher-Price and the CPSC urge customers that this product is not to be used for sleep and bedding materials should never be added to it.

Since 2010, approximately 2.1 million swings were sold in the United States, about 99,000 swings were sold in Canada and about 500 swings were sold in Mexico.

Full details on the recall can be found here.

Nearly 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry recalled for listeria https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/meat-poultry-recall-brucepac-listeria-oklahoma/3532653/ 3532653 post 3294347 The United States Agriculture Department https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2019/09/usda-logo1.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,168 A company is recalling nearly 10 million pounds of meat and poultry products made at an Oklahoma plant because they may be contaminated with listeria bacteria that can cause illness and death.

BrucePac of Woodburn, Oregon, recalled the roughly 5,000 tons of ready-to-eat foods this week after U.S. Agriculture Department officials detected listeria in samples of poultry during routine testing. Further tests identified BrucePac chicken as the source.

The recall includes 75 meat and chicken products.

The foods include products like grilled chicken breast strips that were made at the company’s facility in Durant, Oklahoma. They were produced between June 19 and Oct. 8 and shipped to restaurants, food service vendors and other sites nationwide, government officials said.

The products have a best-by date of June 19, 2025, to Oct. 8, 2025. Officials said they are concerned that the foods may still be available for use or stored in refrigerators or freezers. The products should be thrown away, they added.

There are no confirmed reports of illness linked to the recall.

Eating foods contaminated with listeria can cause potentially serious illness. About 1,600 people are infected with listeria bacteria each year in the U.S. and about 260 die, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Listeria infections typically cause fever, muscle aches and tiredness and may cause stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.

Symptoms can occur quickly or to up to 10 weeks after eating contaminated food. The infections are especially dangerous for older people, those with weakened immune systems or who are pregnant.

Honda recalls nearly 1.7 million vehicles for steering problem that could lead to crashes https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/honda-recalls-nearly-1-7-million-vehicles-steering-problem/3531535/ 3531535 post 9946706 RICHARD A. BROOKS/AFP via Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/10/GettyImages-2151703797.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Honda Motor Co. is recalling close to 1.7 million vehicles due to a manufacturing issue that could make it difficult to steer the vehicles and lead to crashes.

Honda reported the recall last week to government regulators, who issued the recall order on Tuesday.

The safety recall order from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the steering gearbox assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, potentially causing “excessive internal friction” that could make the vehicle difficult to steer and increase the likelihood of a crash.

The vehicles covered in the recall were from model years 2022 to 2025 and include certain Acura Integras, Honda Civics, Honda CR-Vs and Honda HR-Vs.

The NHTSA announced an investigation of the problem back in March after it received 145 complaints from Honda Civic drivers that their steering could stick, forcing them to exert extra effort to turn the steering wheel.

At the time of the original announcement earlier this year, the NHTSA said it had no reports of crashes or injuries from the problem. Tuesday’s order does not mention any accidents or injuries caused by the defect either.

Notification letters are expected to mailed to the vehicle owners on Nov. 18.

Owners will be able to take their vehicles to dealers, who will replace the worm gear spring and reapply grease as necessary at no cost.

Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. The numbers for the recall are SJS, MJU, QJT and VJV.

Tesla has released a free software upgrade to address the issue and owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Nov. 25.

Cybertruck owners have had to deal with a series of recalls since the vehicle went on sale in November. In June, there was a recall to fix problems with trim pieces that can come loose and front windshield wipers that can fail. Two months before that, some Cybertrucks were recalled because the accelerator pedal could stick.

In the most recent recall, the company notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the display screens in effected trucks may remain blank for up to 8 seconds after a driver shifts to reverse. The U.S. requires those screens to activate with a rearview within 2 seconds of shifting into reverse.

Elon Musk’s Tesla delivered the first dozen or so of its futuristic Cybertruck pickups to customers in November, two years behind the original schedule.

Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

FDA issues recall notices over 2 brands of pet food due to salmonella and listeria risk https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/fda-issues-recall-notices-over-2-brands-of-pet-food-due-to-salmonella-and-listeria-risk/3520715/ 3520715 post 9913711 Answers Pet Food / Darwin’s Natural Selections Pet Food https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/09/Pet-Food-recall.png?fit=300,150&quality=85&strip=all Amid an ongoing pet food recall, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is urging pet owners not to give their dogs and cats certain food products from two different brands.

Both the brands, Answers Pet Food and Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, were found to have produced pet food that was contaminated with the bacteria salmonella and listeria, which can cause illness in pets that can then infect their owners.

Answers Pet Food issued an official withdrawal notice over the contamination. The FDA has urged Arrow Alliance, the maker of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, to issue an official recall, though the company has yet to do so. No illnesses have been confirmed.

Pet owners should check to make sure their products are not among the potentially contaminated items before feeding it to their pets, the FDA said. Neither

Pet food recall 2024

In September 2024, the FDA issued notices about two different brands of pet food, urging owners not to feed it to their pets due to the risk of contamination with salmonella and listeria.

The FDA announced that it discovered salmonella in five samples of raw dog food made by Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, manufactured by Arrow Reliance. A sixth sample contained both salmonella and listeria monocytogenes.

“As part of our outreach, we specifically communicated with customers who had already received product lots that were included in the FDA’s notice — about 3% of our customers nationwide. Only a limited amount of product had left our facilities, and the lots are not currently in distribution. Per our protocols, we had preemptively stopped shipping any potentially affected product lots earlier in the month, as soon as the FDA let us know it had taken samples for testing,” a spokesperson Gary Tashjian, founder and CEO of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, tells TODAY.com in a statement in part.

“Darwin’s is confident our meals are safe. As we’ve also shared with our customers, we commissioned independent, third-party testing using conventional methods, which found that all lots tested negative for listeria. The testing found small trace amounts of salmonella, which is inherent to poultry.”

Meanwhile, Answers Pet Food voluntarily recalled three of its dog food products “out of an abundance of caution” when FDA samples found salmonella and listeria in several types of its food, the company said in a statement.

What pet products are recalled?

Consumers should not feed their pets the following food if they have it:

Symptoms of salmonella and listeria in pets

Dogs and cats infected with salmonella do not often show symptoms, unless they’re battling another illness or have a health problem at that time, according to the FDA.

Signs of salmonella in dogs and cats include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Fever
  • No appetite
  • Lethargy

The biggest risk of a pet being infected with salmonella or listeria is that they can give it to humans. Dogs often pass it along by giving kisses or having an accident inside. Cats can spread it by stepping in a litter box and then walk throughout a house. Cleaning up after pets also can cause humans to develop salmonella.

Pets can also carry and pass on listeria, per the FDA. Often, humans contract Listeria from pets when they clean up their feces.

According to the FDA, signs of listeria in pets include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Breathing troubles

For the most part, listeria in pets produces mild symptoms.

10th death reported in Boar's Head deli meat listeria outbreak https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/10-dead-boars-head-deli-meat-listeria-outbreak/3519884/ 3519884 post 9911296 Steve Helber/AP (File) https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/09/BOARS-HEAD.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A 10th person has died in the listeria outbreak that shuttered a Boar’s Head deli meat plant, federal health officials said Wednesday.

At least 59 people in 19 states have been sickened by the bacteria first detected in liverwurst made at the Jarratt, Virginia, plant. Illnesses were reported between late May and late August, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. All of those who fell ill were hospitalized.

The latest fatality was reported in New York, bringing the total deaths to two each in New York and South Carolina and one each in Illinois, New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Tennessee and New Mexico.

The Sarasota, Florida-based company announced on Sept. 13 that it was closing the Jarratt plant and discontinuing production of liverwurst. The moves came after inspection reports revealed problems including mold, insects, dripping water and meat and fat residue on walls, floors and equipment dating back at least two years.

Boar’s Head faces multiple lawsuits related to the deaths and illnesses.

The plant hasn’t operated since late July, when officials with the U.S. Agriculture Department suspended inspections and the firm recalled more than 7 million pounds of deli meats because of potential contamination.

Boar’s Head officials have said they “regret and deeply apologize” for contamination in their products.

Listeria infections are caused by a hardy type of bacteria that can survive and even thrive during refrigeration. An estimated 1,600 people get listeria food poisoning each year and about 260 die, according to the CDC. Infections can be hard to pinpoint because symptoms may occur up to 10 weeks after eating contaminated food.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday that the recall includes certain 2023-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESVs, 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban 1500, 2023 GMC Sierra 1500, 2023-2024 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL models.

The agency said that without the warning light, a vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.

A free software update will be provided to vehicle owners.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Oct. 28. Vehicle owners can contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006.

Nearly 138,000 beds are being recalled after reports of them breaking or collapsing during use https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/beds-recalled-reports-breaking-or-collapsing/3515532/ 3515532 post 9896956 https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/09/Lucid1.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,246 Nearly 138,000 platform beds sold at major retailers including Amazon and Walmart are being recalled across the U.S. and Canada because they can collapse, posing fall and injury risks.

Utah-based importer CVB Inc. is recalling the Lucid-branded platform beds with upholstered square tufted headboards. According to Thursday notices from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, the beds can sag, break or collapse during use.

To date, there have been 245 incidents of this occurring in the U.S., resulting in 18 related injuries such as contusions and bruises, the CPSC said. An additional 11 reports of “bed failures” have been reported in Canada, with no further injuries.

According to Lucid, the recall covers a discontinued version of its platform beds, which the company says were manufactured between 2019 and 2021.

While manufacturing ended several years ago, the now-recalled beds continued to be sold at major retailers through April 2024, the CPSC said. In addition to Amazon, Walmart and Lucid’s website, consumers may have also purchased the beds at Bed Bath & Beyond, eBay, Home Depot, Macys, Target.com, Wayfair and other retailers.

About 137,000 of the recalled beds were sold in the U.S. and 890 in Canada, the CPSC said.

The beds — which were made in Malaysia and come in twin, full, queen, king and cal-king sizes — can be identified with a white law label found on the back of the headboard. “Made For: CVB INC, 1525 W 2960 S, LOGAN, UT 84321” should be printed on it.

People who have the recalled beds are urged to stop using them immediately and contact Lucid for a free replacement frame.

Consumers will have to write the word “recalled” on the bed’s support rails with a permanent marker and send photos to Lucid. More information about getting a replacement can be found on Lucid’s recall page.

Stellantis recalls 1.5M Ram trucks to fix software bug that can disable stability control https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/stellantis-recalls-ram-trucks/3505630/ 3505630 post 9865491 AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/09/AP24251520705708.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Stellantis is recalling nearly 1.5 million Ram pickup trucks worldwide to fix a software problem that can disable the electronic stability control system.

The recall covers certain trucks from the 2019 and 2021 through 2024 model years, mostly in North America.

Stellantis said in a statement Saturday that the trucks may have anti-lock brake software that could inadvertently shut down the stability control, which manages the throttle and brakes to avoid skidding.

If that happens, the company said the brakes would still work. Stellantis said it’s not aware of any crashes or injuries from the problem.

U.S. safety standards require electronic stability control to work during nearly all phases of driving, the company says.

Dealers will update software to fix the problem at no cost to owners, who will be notified by letters starting Oct. 3.

Wisconsin health officials recall eggs after a multistate salmonella outbreak https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/wisconsin-egg-recall-salmonella-outbreak/3505521/ 3505521 post 6740135 Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2021/12/cdc.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Wisconsin health officials initiated a recall of eggs following an outbreak of salmonella infections among 65 people in nine states that originated on a Wisconsin farm.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services said in a statement Friday that among those infected by salmonella are 42 people in Wisconsin, where the eggs are believed to have been sold.

“The eggs were distributed in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan through retail stores and food service distributors,” the department said. “The recall includes all egg types such as conventional cage-free, organic, and non-GMO, carton sizes, and expiration dates in containers labeled with ‘Milo’s Poultry Farms’ or ‘Tony’s Fresh Market.’”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed in a statement on its website that 65 people in nine states were infected by a strain of salmonella, with 24 hospitalizations and no deaths as of Friday. The states include Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Virginia, Colorado, Utah and California, the agency said.

The egg recall was undertaken by Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC of Bonduel, Wisconsin, the CDC said.

“Anyone who purchased the recalled eggs is advised to not eat them or cook with them and to throw them away. Restaurants should not sell or serve recalled eggs,” the Wisconsin health department said.

The department advised anyone who ate the eggs and is experiencing symptoms to contact a health care provider. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and vomiting lasting for several days, the statement said.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture in July announced new measures to limit salmonella in poultry products. The proposed directive included requiring poultry companies to keep salmonella levels under a certain threshold and test for the presence of six particularly sickening forms of the bacteria, three found in turkey and three in chicken.

Bacteria exceeding the proposed standard and identification of any of the strains would prevent poultry sales and leave the products subject to recall.

The CDC estimates salmonella causes 1.35 million infections annually, most through food, and about 420 deaths. The Agriculture Department estimates there are 125,000 infections from chicken and 43,000 from turkey each year.

One more death in US, the 28th, is attributed to Takata air bag inflators that can spew shrapnel https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/28th-us-death-takata-air-bag-inflators-shrapnel/3501683/ 3501683 post 9853040 AP Photo/Shizuo Kambayashi https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/09/AP24247508631628-e1725390826509.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,178 Another death has been linked to dangerous Takata air bag inflators by U.S. regulators, the 28th in the United States.

The driver was killed in 2018 in Alabama in a Honda vehicle, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said, but gave no further details. It says the death underscores the need for people to replace recalled air bag inflators.

Takata used ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate air bags in a crash. But the chemical can deteriorate over time due to high heat and humidity and explode with too much force. That can blow apart a metal canister and send shrapnel into the passenger compartment. More than 400 people in the U.S. have been hurt.

Worldwide at least 36 people have been killed by Takata inflators in Malaysia, Australia and the U.S.

Honda said in a statement that the Alabama death occurred in Etowah County and involved a 2004 Honda Civic. It involved a high speed crash which complicated efforts to definitively determine the cause of death.

Honda, the company that used more Takata air bags in its cars than any other automaker, said it has replaced or accounted for 95% of the recalled inflators in its vehicles.

“Honda continues to urge owners of Honda and Acura vehicles affected by the Takata air bag inflator recalls to get their vehicles repaired at an authorized dealership as soon as possible,” the company statement said.

Honda and Acura owners can check their for recalls at www.recalls.honda.com and www.recalls.acura.com. Owners also can go to nhtsa.com/recalls and key in their vehicle identification or license plate numbers.

Potential for a dangerous malfunction led to the largest series of auto recalls in U.S. history, with at least 67 million Takata inflators involved.

The U.S. government says many have not been repaired. About 100 million inflators have been recalled worldwide. The exploding air bags sent Takata into bankruptcy.

Insects and mold found at Boar's Head plant in Virginia amid nationwide listeria outbreak, records show https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/boars-head-virginia-plant-listeria-outbreak-deli-meat/3499241/ 3499241 post 9844133 Justin Sullivan/Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/08/GettyImages-2164656717_8cc69d.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,219 A Boar’s Head deli meat plant in Virginia tied to a deadly food poisoning outbreak repeatedly violated federal regulations, including instances of mold, insects, liquid dripping from ceilings, and meat and fat residue on walls, floors and equipment, newly released records show.

Government inspectors logged 69 instances of “noncompliance” with federal rules in the past year, including several in recent weeks, according to documents released through federal Freedom of Information Act requests.

Inspections at the plant have been suspended and it will remain closed “until the establishment is able to demonstrate it can produce safe product,” U.S. Agriculture Department officials said in a statement Thursday. Boar’s Head officials halted production at the Jarratt, Virginia, plant in late July.

The plant has been linked to the deaths of at least nine people and hospitalizations of about 50 others in 18 states. All were sickened with listeria after eating Boar’s Head Provisions Co. Inc. deli meats. The company recalled more than 7 million pounds of products last month after tests confirmed that listeria bacteria in Boar’s Head products were making people sick.

Between Aug. 1, 2023, and Aug. 2, 2024, inspectors found “heavy discolored meat buildup” and “meat overspray on walls and large pieces of meat on the floor.” They also documented flies “going in and out” of pickle vats and “black patches of mold” on a ceiling. One inspector detailed blood puddled on the floor and “a rancid smell in the cooler.” Plant staff were repeatedly notified that they had failed to meet requirements, the documents showed.

“I think it is disgusting and shameful,” said Garshon Morgenstein, whose 88-year-old father, Gunter, died July 18 from a listeria infection traced to Boar’s Head liverwurst. “I’m just even more in shock that this was allowed to happen.”

The plant was inspected by Virginia officials through a partnership with the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service. When problems were found, Boar’s Head took “corrective actions in keeping with FSIS regulations,” officials said. Federal reports show no enforcement actions against Boar’s Head between January and March, the latest records available.

The documents, first reported by CBS News, didn’t contain any test results that confirmed listeria in the factory. The bacteria thrive on floors, walls and drains, in cracks and crevices and hard-to-clean parts of food processing equipment. Pests such as flies can easily spread the bacteria through a plant and the germ can survive in biofilms — thin, slimy collections of bacteria that are difficult to eradicate.

Officials with Boar’s Head did not respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press, but a spokesperson told CBS that the company regrets the impact of the recall and prioritizes food safety. On its website, the company said all the issues raised by government inspectors were addressed immediately.

Barbara Kowalcyk, director of the Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition Security at George Washington University, said the records raise a lot of red flags.

“It makes me wonder why additional actions weren’t taken by management of that company and the regulators,” she said.

Donald Schaffner, a Rutgers food science and safety expert who reviewed the inspection documents, said reports of condensation throughout the plant are concerning because that’s a known risk factor for listeria.

“The fact that they are having the same problems over and over again weeks apart is an indication that they really struggling to keep up with sanitation,” Schaffner said.

Listeria infections cause about 1,600 illnesses each year in the U.S. and about 260 people die, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People older than 65, those who are pregnant or who have weakened immune systems are most vulnerable.

Bill Marler, a Seattle lawyer who has sued companies over food poisoning outbreaks, said the conditions described in the inspections reports were the worst he’s seen in three decades.

Garshon Morgenstein said his father bought Boar’s Head products because of the company’s reputation.

“For the rest of my life, I have to remember my father’s death every time I see or hear the name Boar’s Head,” he said.

Magnetic chess games recalled due to ingestion hazard https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/magnetic-chess-games-recalled-ingestion-hazard/3498982/ 3498982 post 9843465 Courtesy CPSC https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/08/JOMO-magnetic-chess-front_bd2db8.jpeg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,195 The Consumer Product and Safety Commission is warning people to immediately dispose of a 1 set puzzle “Magnetic”, “Magnetism”, or “Magnetism Intelligence Strategy Game” – a magnetic battle chess game because it poses serious ingestion risks for children.

The CPSC posted a warning Thursday that “Magnetic Chess Games” sold by China-based seller JOMO contain magnets that do not comply with U.S. federal safety regulations. As a result, the “loose, hazardous magnets pose a risk of serious injury or death,” according to the warning.

The CPSC said it issued a violation notice to JOMO, but that the company has not agreed to recall its Magnetic Chess Games or provide a remedy. The commission urged people to stop using the game and throw it away immediately.

The games were sold online at walmart.com in a blue box with the word “Magnetic” on the front and back, according to the CPSC. They include about 20 loose black magnets but not chess-shaped pieces, despite its marketing.

It’s unclear when or how long these games were sold. A CPSC spokesperson said the commission could not provide further information since JOMO is not cooperating.

Experts have long noted the serious health hazards tied to swallowing magnets, with children particularly at risk. When high-powered magnets are ingested, the CPSC noted, they can attract each other or another metal object in the body and become lodged in the digestive system — potentially resulting in blockage, infection, blood poisoning or death.

Overall, the CPSC estimates that a total of 2,400 magnet ingestions were treated in hospitals annually between 2017 and 2021. The commission said it is aware of eight related deaths from 2005 through 2021, two of which were outside the U.S.

CDC reports 6 new deaths in deli meat listeria outbreak https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/cdc-reports-5-new-deaths-in-deli-meat-listeria-outbreak-that-hospitalized-3-mass-residents/3498045/ 3498045 post 9746230 Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/07/GettyImages-1806590155_07002b.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Six more people have now died from a food poisoning outbreak that led to the recall of more than 7 million pounds of deli meats, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Wednesday.

Nine people have now died as a result of the outbreak, which the agency said is now the largest listeria outbreak in the U.S. since 2011. Fifty-seven people have been hospitalized.

Health officials linked the outbreak to the popular Boar’s Head deli meats, which are made at a plant in Virginia.

The new food poisoning toll includes two deaths in South Carolina plus one each in Florida, New Mexico, Tennessee and New York, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Three deaths were previously confirmed in people who lived in Illinois, New Jersey and Virginia.

Listeria poisoning is caused by a particularly resilient type of bacteria that can survive and grow even during refrigeration, according to the CDC.

Listeria bacteria thrive in moist environments, including soil and water and decaying vegetation and are carried by some animals. The hardy germs are typically spread when food is harvested, processed, transported or stored in places that are contaminated with the bacteria. When the bacteria get into a food processing plant, they can be tough to eradicate.

Many of the people in the outbreak reported eating meats sliced at grocery store deli counters. During the investigation, listeria was detected in an unopened loaf of Boar’s Head liverwurst at a Maryland store; the Agriculture Department said further testing showed the same strain was causing illnesses in people.

People are sickened with listeria poisoning when they eat foods contaminated with the bacteria. Symptoms can be mild and include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. More serious illness can include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.

Listeria poisoning is tricky because symptoms can start quickly, within a few hours or days after eating contaminated food. But they also can take weeks or up to three months to show up.

Those most vulnerable to getting sick include the very young, people older than 65 and those with weakened immune systems or who are pregnant.

Walmart recalls Great Value apple juice due to elevated arsenic levels https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/walmart-apple-juice-recall/3495696/ 3495696 post 9832182 Photographer: Ting Shen/Bloomberg via Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/08/GettyImages-2166120326.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Walmart has recalled nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice sold in stores across the U.S. that were found to contain potentially harmful levels of inorganic arsenic.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave the recall a more urgent classification Friday after making its original announcement Aug. 15. The new classification said the affected product may temporarily cause adverse health consequences but is unlikely to cause serious or irreversible medical issues.

The recall applies to 9,535 cases of Great Value brand apple juice sold in 25 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Those states are: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia.

Florida-based manufacturer Refresco Beverages US Inc. voluntarily recalled the contaminated six-packs of 8-ounce (227-gram) juice bottles with the “Best if Used by DEC2824” code and the UPC number 0-78742-29655-5. after discovering levels of the chemical contaminant that exceeded industry standards.

Spokespeople for Refresco and Walmart did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment Sunday.

Very low levels of inorganic and organic arsenic are found in most food products, according to the National Institutes of Health. Testing is routine, as slightly elevated levels of either form can cause symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, numbness and muscle cramping.

Inorganic arsenic is more toxic to humans than the naturally occurring form of the mineral arsenic, and the health effects from exposure are more severe, according to the FDA. The Environmental Protection Agency has labeled inorganic arsenic a carcinogen, or a substance that causes cancer.

Levels found in the recalled apple juice bottles are low enough that the FDA does not expect them to cause such severe health consequences.

The FDA has not shared reports of possible illnesses associated with the apple juice recall.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the recall includes some X1, X3 and X5 vehicles as well as some other models.

The impacted vehicles have water pumps with insufficient sealing, according to the NHTSA report, and may be susceptible to fluid ingress at the electrical plug connector over time. There is the possibility that a short circuit could occur, and there’s the potential for a fire, in rare cases.

Water pumps and plug connectors will be inspected and replaced as necessary. A shield will be also installed to divert any fluid that might drop down onto the pump from the positive crankcase ventilation system’s intake air house, the report said.

Vehicle owners are expected to receive a recall notification in October. They will be instructed to take their cars to an authorized BMW center to have the appropriate remedies performed for free.

The company said in a press release Friday that no injuries or illnesses have been reported after consuming these products.

According to the FSIS, consumers complained about a metal wire embedded in the product and notified the agency.

“We determined the material to be a very thin strand of metal wire that was inadvertently introduced into the manufacturing process,” Jeff Shaw, Perdue senior vice president of food safety and quality, said in a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, we decided to voluntarily recall all of these packages of products.”

The company and the FSIS advised consumers to not eat the chicken and either throw the product away or return to their place of purchase. Customers can receive a full refund from Perdue by calling 866-866-3703.

Recalled cucumbers linked to at least 449 illnesses have been pulled from stores, CDC says https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/recalled-cucumbers-linked-to-449-illnesses-pulled-from-stores-cdc-says/3489174/ 3489174 post 9807592 CDC https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/08/Recalled-cucumbers-salmonella.webp?fit=300,200&quality=85&strip=all At least 449 people were likely sickened by cucumbers tainted with Salmonella bacteria, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.

Since June, the agency has been investigating an outbreak linked to cucumbers originating with producers in Florida. In its latest update, it said individuals in 31 states and the District of Columbia reported becoming ill after eating affected cucumbers, with 125 ending up hospitalized, though no deaths were reported.

The agency still lists its investigation as active — but it emphasized that there are no more affected products in stores and that there is “likely no ongoing risk to the public.”

In a separate release, the Food and Drug Administration said it had matched Salmonella strains found in untreated canal water near Bedner Growers, Inc., of Palm Beach County, Florida, to ones that comprise the outbreak — but that the grower “does not account for all the illnesses in this outbreak.”

A representative for Bedners did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Another Palm Beach County grower, Thomas Produce Company, also supplied cucumbers linked to the outbreak, the FDA said. A representative for Thomas did not respond to a request for comment.

Earlier, the investigation prompted a Florida distributor, Fresh Start Produce, to recall all its cucumbers grown in Florida. However, a subsequent finding determined the strain of Salmonella found in a sampling of its product did not match the ones linked to the outbreak.

A representative for Fresh Start Produce did not respond to a request for comment.

Ford, Mazda warn owners to stop driving older vehicles with dangerous Takata air bag inflators https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/ford-mazda-recall-vehicles-over-dangerous-takata-airbags/3487288/ 3487288 post 6919331 Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2022/02/GettyImages-1238128880.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Ford and Mazda are warning the owners of more than 475,000 older vehicles in the U.S. not to drive them because they have dangerous Takata airbag inflators that have not been replaced.

The warning issued Tuesday covers more than 374,000 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles from the 2004 through 2014 model years and nearly 83,000 Mazdas from the 2003 through 2015 model years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the inflators can explode with too much force in a crash, blowing apart a metal canister and shooting fragments that can severely injure or kill people. All were recalled previously but repairs have not been completed.

Ford models covered by the warning include 2004 to 2011 Ranger pickups, 2005 through 2014 Mustangs, 2005 and 2006 Ford GTs, 2006 through 2012 Fusions and 2007 through 2010 Edge SUVs.

Affected Mercury and Lincoln models include the Milan, MKZ and Zephyr from 2006 through 2012, and the MKX from 2007 through 2010.

Mazdas covered by the warning are the 2004 to 2009 B-Series pickup, 2003 through 2013 Mazda 6, the 2006 and 2007 Speed6 and the 2004 through 2011 RX-8. Also included are the 2004 through 2006 MPV, the 2007 through 2012 CX-7 and the 2007 through 2015 CX-9.

The government says 27 people have been killed in the U.S. by faulty Takata inflators, which used volatile ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate air bags in a crash. The chemical can deteriorate over time when exposed to high temperatures and humidity. More than 400 people in the U.S. have been hurt.

Worldwide at least 35 people have been killed by Takata inflators in Malaysia, Australia and the U.S.

Owners can check to see if their vehicles are covered by going to the NHTSA website and keying in their vehicle identification or license plate numbers.Ford and Mazda also have recall websites.

If a vehicle has an unrepaired Takata inflator, owners should stop driving them and call a dealer to set up a repair appointment. Ford and Mazda are offering free towing or mobile repairs and loaner vehicles if necessary, NHTSA says.

“Even minor crashes can result in exploding Takata air bags that can kill or produce life-altering, gruesome injuries,” the agency said in a statement. “Older model year vehicles put their occupants at higher risk.”

Ford says more than 765,000 inflators in Ford and Lincoln vehicles worldwide should not be driven until the air bag inflators have been replaced. In the U.S., the company has made more than 121 million attempts to contact owners including emails, phone calls, text messages and visits to customer homes. The company says over 95% of its U.S. customers have had their inflators replaced.

Nissan, Honda, Stellantis, Ford, BMW and Toyota and Mazda have previously isued similar “do not drive”warnings for some of their vehicles equipped with Takata inflators.

Samsung is recalling more than 1 million electric ranges after numerous fire and injury reports https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/samsung-is-recalling-more-than-1-million-electric-ranges-after-numerous-fire-and-injury-reports/3483393/ 3483393 post 9786714 US Consumer Product Safety Commission https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/08/image_727eff.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Samsung is recalling more than 1.12 million electric ranges used for stovetops after reports of 250 fires and dozens of injuries.

According to a Thursday notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, these slide-in ranges have front-mounted knobs that can be activated by accident if humans or pets unintentionally contact or bump into them. That poses a fire hazard.

To date, Samsung has received more than 300 reports of the knobs activating unintentionally since 2013, the CPSC noted, and the now-recalled ranges have been involved in about 250 fires. At least 18 of those fires caused extensive property damage and seven involved pet deaths, according to the Commission.

In addition, the CPSC added, about 40 injuries have been reported, including eight that required medical attention.

Consumers can identify whether their slide-in electric range is included in this recall by looking at the model number printed on the product. Both Samsung and the CPSC have published a list of affected models online.

The recalled ranges were sold between May 2013 and August 2024 online at Samsung.com as well as in retailers nationwide — including Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot and Lowe’s.

Consumers in possession of a recalled range are urged to contact New Jersey-based Samsung Electronics America for a free set of knob locks or covers compatible for installation with their model. In the meantime, those impacted should take extra caution to keep children and pets away from the knobs, and check their range before leaving the house or going to bed to make sure it’s off, the CPSC said.

As part of general stovetop and oven safety, the Commission added that consumers should “never place, leave, or store anything on the top of your range” when not in use — as such items can ignite if it’s accidentally activated.

To receive a set of free knob locks or covers, depending on their model, customers can visit https://www.samsung.com/us/support/range-knob-kit/, contact Samsung toll-free at 1-833-775-0120 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or by email at rangesupport@sea.samsung.com.

Here's what to know about the listeria outbreak and Boar's Head recall impacting multiple states https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/what-is-listeria-outbreak-boars-head-deli-meats-recall/3477479/ 3477479 post 9761440 Justin Sullivan/Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/08/GettyImages-2164656717.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,219 A deadly food poisoning outbreak has led to the recall of more than 7 million pounds of popular Boar’s Head deli meats made at a plant in Virginia.

U.S. health officials are investigating the outbreak of the bacteria listeria that began in May. Two people have died and nearly three dozen were hospitalized in 13 states.

Listeria poisoning is caused by a particularly resilient type of bacteria that can survive and grow even during refrigeration, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Here’s what you need to know:

How can listeria get into deli meat?

How does listeria make people sick?

People are sickened with listeria poisoning when they eat foods contaminated with the bacteria. Symptoms can be mild and include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. More serious illness can include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.

Listeria poisoning is tricky, because symptoms can start quickly, within a few hours or days after eating contaminated food. But they also can take weeks or up to three months to show up.

Those most vulnerable to getting sick include the very young, people older than 65 and those with weakened immune systems or who are pregnant.

Does cooking kill listeria?

Listeria can survive and grow in food even when it’s refrigerated, but the bacteria can be killed by heating foods to “steaming hot,” or 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius), the CDC says. People who are most at risk for illness should avoid the products or heat them before eating.

Most deli meats, however, are eaten cold. Because listeria can survive under refrigeration, it’s important to clean and sanitize any surfaces, including refrigerator drawers and shelves, that may have come in contact with the products, the CDC says.

What should I do if I have the recalled deli meats?

Many of the products recalled by Boar’s Head are meats meant to be sliced at grocery store deli counters, though some prepackaged meats are included in the recall.

They include liverwurst, ham, beef salami, bologna and other products made at the company’s Jarratt, Virginia, plant. The recalled meats carry the plant’s number — EST.12612 or P-12612 — inside the USDA mark on the label. The meat was distributed to stores nationwide, as well as to the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Panama.

Consumers should not eat the recalled meats and should discard them or return them to the store for a refund.

Boar's Head deli meat recall expands to include 7 million more pounds over listeria concerns https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/boars-head-recall-deli-meats-listeria/3474012/ 3474012 post 9746230 Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/07/GettyImages-1806590155_07002b.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 The popular deli meat company Boar’s Head is recalling an additional 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat products made at a Virginia plant as an investigation into a deadly outbreak of listeria food poisoning continues, U.S. Agriculture Department officials said Tuesday.

The new recall includes 71 products made between May 10 and July 29 under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names. It follows an earlier recall of more than 200,000 pounds of sliced deli poultry and meat. The new items include meat intended to be sliced at delis as well as some packaged meat and poultry products sold in stores.

They include liverwurst, ham, beef salami, bologna and other products made at the firm’s Jarratt, Virginia, plant.

Click here for the full list of recalled products.

The recalls are tied to an ongoing outbreak of listeria poisoning that has killed two people and sickened nearly three dozen in 13 states, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly all of those who fell ill have been hospitalized. Illnesses were reported between late May and mid-July.

The problem was discovered when a liverwurst sample collected by health officials in Maryland tested positive for listeria. Further testing showed that the type of bacteria was the same strain causing illnesses in people.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we decided to immediately and voluntarily expand our recall to include all items produced at the Jarratt facility,” the company said on its website. It has also halted production of ready-to-eat foods at the plant.

The meat was distributed to stores nationwide, as well as to the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Panama, Agriculture Department officials said.

Consumers who have the recalled products in their homes should not eat them and should discard them or return them to stores for a refund, company officials said. Health officials said refrigerators should be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized to prevent contamination of other foods.

An estimated 1,600 people get listeria food poisoning each year and about 260 die, according to the CDC.

Listeria infections typically cause fever, muscle aches and tiredness and may cause stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. Symptoms can occur quickly or to up to 10 weeks after eating contaminated food. The infections are especially dangerous for people older than 65, those with weakened immune systems and during pregnancy.

Vegetables sold at Walmart and Aldi recalled over listeria concerns https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/vegetables-sold-at-walmart-and-aldi-recalled-over-listeria-concerns/3471007/ 3471007 post 9733870 Rick T. Wilking/Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/07/GettyImages-964537034.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Nearly 20 types of vegetables — including cucumbers, bell peppers, green beans and parsley — have been recalled from grocery stores across the country due to listeria concerns.

Ohio-based Weirs Farm Inc. is recalling produce sold at Walmart, Kroger, Aldi and more stores in over a dozen states, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced in a press release earlier this week.

The recall is an expansion of a July 12 recall of cucumbers that may be contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Weirs Farm Inc. expanded its original recall to include additional produce “out of an abundance of caution,” the company said.

Consuming food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause a serious infection called listeriosis. To date, there have been no illnesses or complaints reported, the FDA said.

News of the recall comes amid an unrelated multistate listeria outbreak in deli meats, which has sickened 34 and left two people dead

Which vegetables were recalled?

The recalled products include:

  • Packaged poblano
  • Cubanelle
  • Green beans
  • Cucumbers
  • Jalapeños
  • Bell peppers
  • Yellow squash
  • Zucchini

Additionally, the following vegetables and herbs sold by the pound have been recalled

  • Anaheim peppers
  • Cilantro
  • Habanero peppers
  • Hungarian wax peppers
  • Mustard greens
  • Parsley
  • Serrano peppers
  • Tomatillos

These were packed between July 5 and July 12, per the FDA.

States affected by recall

The packaged and bulk produce was distributed to stores in the following states, per the FDA:

  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • Missouri
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia

A detailed list of recalled items and affected stores in each state can be viewed here.

What is listeria?

Listeria infection can be deadly and is more likely to infect pregnant people and their newborns, people over the age of 65, and individuals with people with weakened immune systems, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

An estimated 1,600 people get sick with listeriosis annually and about 260 die, per the CDC. Listeria is the third-leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the U.S.

Symptoms of listeriosis depend on the person, their underlying health and the part of the body affected.

In healthy children and non-pregnant people, listeria can cause intestinal illness and rarely becomes serious, per the FDA. In pregnant adults and people with weaker immune systems, listeriosis can cause invasive illness, which occurs when the bacteria spread beyond the gut, per the CDC.

Intestinal illness caused by listeria usually begins 24 hours after eating contaminated food and lasts for one to three days.

Intestinal illness symptoms

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Invasive listeriosis has a longer incubation period. Symptoms typically appear two weeks after exposure, according to the CDC. These include:

Invasive listeriosis symptoms in pregnant people

  • Fever
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as fatigue and muscle aches

Invasive listeriosis symptoms in non-pregnant people

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches and fatigue
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Seizures

Consumers who have eaten contaminated produce and experience any symptoms should seek medical attention or contact their healthcare provider immediately.

In a press release, Aldi advised customers who purchased recalled products to discard or return them to a local store for a full refund.

Last week, a Walmart spokesperson told NBC News on Friday that the recalled products have been removed from the stores and that the company is “working with the supplier to investigate the cause,” NBC News reported.

“Wiers Farm Inc. is committed to implementing all measures necessary to fully resolve this situation,” the FDA said.

How to prevent listeria

Following basic food safety precautions can help reduce your risk of listeria, per the FDA. These include:

  • Wash all fresh produce.
  • Refrigerate food at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
  • Cook and reheat food to a safe internal temperature.
  • Store leftovers within two hours.
  • Consume pre-made, ready-to-eat foods as soon as possible or before the sell by date.
  • Keep refrigerator shelves clean.

Foods that are more likely to be contaminated with listeria include lunch meats (unless heated), soft cheeses, unpasteurized or raw dairy, refrigerated pâtés, refrigerated smoked seafood, and sprouts, according to the CDC.

Pregnant people and people with weak immune systems should avoid these risky foods and talk to their health care provider if they have questions.

Boar's Head recalls over 200,000 pounds of deli meats over listeria concerns https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/boars-head-recalls-over-200000-pounds-of-deli-meats-over-listeria-concerns/3470543/ 3470543 post 9728401 Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/07/GettyImages-1806590155.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Boar’s Head is recalling more than 207,000 pounds of liverwurst and other deli meat products nationwide because they may be contaminated with listeria, according to the USDA.

The products have been classified as unfit for human consumption. As of Thursday, the CDC reported 34 illnesses in 13 states, including 33 hospitalizations and two deaths.

The ready-to-eat liverwurst products were produced between June 11 and July 17, 2024. The following liverwurst products are subject to recall:

  • 3.5-lb. loaves in plastic casing, or various weight packages sliced in retail delis, containing “Boar’s Head Strassburger Brand Liverwurst MADE IN VIRGINIA.” The products shipped to retailers bear sell-by dates ranging July 25, 2024, to Aug. 30, 2024, printed on the side of the packaging.

The other ready-to-eat deli meat products that were recalled, produced on June 27, 2024, are:

  • 9.5-lb. and 4.5-lb. full product, or various weight packages sliced in retail delis, containing “Boar’s Head VIRGINIA HAM OLD FASHIONED HAM” with sell by date “AUG 10” on the product packaging.
  • 4-lb., or various weight packages sliced in retail delis, containing “Boar’s Head ITALIAN CAPPY STYLE HAM” with sell by date “AUG 10” on the product packaging.
  • 6-lb., or various weight packages sliced in retail delis, containing “Boar’s Head EXTRA HOT ITALIAN CAPPY STYLE HAM” with sell by date “AUG 10” on the product packaging.
  • 4-lb., or various weight packages sliced in retail delis, containing “Boar’s Head BOLOGNA” with sell by date “AUG 10” on the product packaging.
  • 2.5-lb., or various weight packages sliced in retail delis, containing “Boar’s Head BEEF SALAMI” with sell by date “AUG 10” on the product packaging.
  • 5.5-lb., or various weight packages sliced in retail delis, containing “Boar’s Head STEAKHOUSE ROASTED BACON HEAT & EAT” with sell by date “AUG 15” on the product packaging.
  • 3-lb., or various weight packages sliced in retail delis, containing “Boar’s Head GARLIC BOLOGNA” with sell by date “AUG 10” on the product packaging.
  • 3-lb., or various weight packages sliced in retail delis, containing “Boar’s Head BEEF BOLOGNA” with sell by date “AUG 10” on the product packaging.

Listeria can cause serious infection and spreads easily among deli equipment, surfaces and food, according to the CDC. While refrigeration cannot kill the bacteria, reheating meats to a high enough temperature can.

Health officials advise people to clean refrigerators, containers and surfaces that may have touched sliced deli meats.

Those experiencing symptoms, such as fever, muscle aches and tiredness, should seek medical care immediately. People may also get a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or seizures. Pregnant people are at additional risk of miscarriages, premature birth or serious illness in newborns.

While symptoms usually start within two weeks of food contaminated with listeria, they can also appear as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks after.

In February, officials also issued a recall of queso fresco and cotija cheese after a listeria outbreak infected over 26 people in 11 states.

FDA issues new alert about lead contamination in cinnamon https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/fda-issues-new-alert-about-lead-contamination-in-cinnamon/3469259/ 3469259 post 9725939 Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/07/GettyImages-1135156228.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 The Food and Drug Administration said in a new alert Thursday that it has identified an additional cinnamon product sold in the U.S. that has been contaminated with lead.

The ground cinnamon, sold as El Servidor and distributed by an Elmhurst, New York, company of the same name, joins a growing list of cinnamon products identified by the FDA to contain high levels of lead.

Through testing, the cinnamon was found to have elevated lead levels at 20 parts per million. While the FDA does not have limits for lead levels in spices, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization has a proposed international safety standard of 2.5 parts per million of lead for bark spices like cinnamon.

El Servidor Corp. ground cinnamon.
El Servidor Corp. ground cinnamon. (FDA)

The FDA asked the distributor to voluntarily recall the product.

In March, the FDA warned about lead in cinnamon sold at Dollar Tree and Family Dollar and other stores. Those products had levels of lead ranging from 2.03 to 3.4 parts per million.

One sample of cinnamon used in the previously recalled WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree was found to have 5,110 parts per million of lead.

The cinnamon identified in the new alert was sold at a supermarket in New York City, although it’s unclear whether it was distributed more widely. The FDA didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Leigh Frame, director of integrative medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, called the new recall “alarming.”

We sort of assume things are safe until proven otherwise,” Frame said. “It’s not until people get sick do we actually have these recalls. Often it’s too late; people have already consumed the products.”

In a perfect world, she added, the FDA would be able to get ahead of recalls by testing food products for dangerous contaminants before people get exposed.

“It’s a little scary to think about all the things that potentially could be lurking in our food system because we don’t have the resources,” Frame said.

No illnesses were reported in the FDA warning. The agency advised consumers to stop using the product and throw it away.

Lead is toxic, especially for children

Elevated levels of lead can be extremely toxic to the body, particularly for young children, who are more at risk because of their smaller body size and the fact that they are still growing. High levels of lead exposure in this age group can cause long-term neurologic and developmental problems such as learning disabilities and lowered IQ.

Frame doesn’t think consumers should completely cut out cinnamon, but recommends limiting exposure, particularly for young kids.

“If you have cinnamon oatmeal every morning, maybe switch to a different variety for a while until we figure things out, just to reduce the exposure,” she said.

Symptoms of lead exposure may include:

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue

Here’s what to know:

Hover-1 Dynamo E-Scooters

DGL Group is recalling Hover-1 Dynamo E-Scooters due to the risk of serious injury and crash hazard, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The e-scooter’s brakes can fail, posing a risk of serious injury and crash hazard, according to the manufacturer.

DGL Group has received 22 reports of the e-scooter’s brakes failing, which resulted in seven injuries, including abrasions, contusions, a dislocated shoulder, fractured teeth, lacerations and strains.

This recall involves Hover-1 Dynamo e-scooters with certain serial numbers. Only scooters with the letters “WY” as the seventh and eighth letter in the serial number are included in this recall. The serial number can be found on a label on the underside of the scooter.

The two-wheeled recalled scooters are matte black and have a kickstand and reflective lights at the front and back of the stand board. The Hover-1 logo appears on the stand board and on the bottom of the stem. Hover-1 is printed on the middle of the stem.

Consumers should stop using the recalled e-scooters immediately and contact DGL Group for instructions on how to receive a full refund.

To receive a refund, consumers will be required to provide photographs of their e-scooter’s serial number and severed motor cable.

The e-scooters were sold online at Walmart.com from November 2021 through July 2022 for about $200.

Razor Icon electric scooters

Razor is recalling thousands of Icon electric scooters because its parts can become separated during use, posing a fall hazard, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recall involves about 7,300 Razor Icon electric scooters with the model numbers 13110003, 13110005, 13110040, 13110042, 13110060, 13110061, 13110062, 13110063, 13110084.

Model numbers are printed in the lower right corner of the label on the bottom of the deck.

The recalled Icon electric scooters were sold in black, blue, orange, pink and red colors at Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and other stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Razor.com and other websites from September 2022 through March 2024 for about $600.

The downtube on the recalled scooters can separate from the floorboard during use, posing a fall hazard.

Razor said it has received 34 reports of partial or complete downtube separation, with two reported injuries, including bruising.

Shoppers should immediately stop using the recalled scooters and contact Razor for a refund or coupon.

Consumers with proof of purchase for a recalled scooter bought on or after March 11, 2023, can receive a full refund. All other consumers can receive a $700 coupon for a future purchase on razor.com or can request a $300 refund.

To receive a refund or coupon, consumers will be asked to remove the handlebar and return it to Razor, which will send consumers a prepaid shipping label and pouch for the return.

The scooter’s lithium-ion batteries must not be discarded in the trash. It can only be disposed of in accordance with any local or state battery disposal laws.

BMW recalls nearly 300,000 SUVs over interior cargo rail issues https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/bmw-recalls-2018-2023-x3-suvs-over-interior-cargo-rail-issues/3468078/ 3468078 post 9721557 Krisztian Bocsi/Bloomberg via Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/07/GettyImages-1248309985.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 BMW is recalling more than 291,000 SUVs in the U.S. because the interior cargo rails can detach in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

The recall covers certain X3 SUVs from the 2018 through 2023 model years.

The company says in documents posted by U.S. safety regulators that dealers will replace the rear cargo rail bolts that attach to the vehicle body. The company expects to notify owners by letter starting Aug. 30.

BMW says in documents posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that in rare cases the attachment to the body could be damaged.

The documents say BMW found out about the problem in August of 2022 after an “extreme rear crash” involving a 2022 BMW X3. BMW was served with legal documents in the case in March of this year, when it was able to inspect the SUV.

The documents don’t say whether anyone has been injured due to the problem. A message was left Wednesday seeking comment from BMW.

Earlier in July, BMW recalled nearly 400,000 vehicles over airbag inflator explosion concerns.

Over 3 million steam cleaners are under recall because they can spew hot water and cause burns https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/over-3-million-bissell-steam-cleaners-recalled/3463221/ 3463221 post 9705678 Courtesy Bissell https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/07/Bissell-steamer-recall.webp?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Some 3.3 million steam cleaners are being recalled across North America due to a burn hazard that has resulted in consumers reporting more than 150 injuries.

Select models of Bissell-branded “Steam Shot Handheld Steam Cleaners” can spew hot water or steam while the products are in use or being heated up, according to notices Thursday from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada. That poses a risk of burns to users.

Bissell has received 183 reports of hot water or steam expelling from the products. That includes 157 reports of minor burns, the regulators noted, with 145 injuries reported in the U.S. and 12 in Canada as of June 4, according to Health Canada.

Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the now-recalled steam cleaners and contact Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Bissell for a refund or store credit. Impacted customers will have a choice between $60 (CA$82) in store credit or a $40 (CA$55) refund for each.

The recalled steam cleaners, which were made in China, can be identified by model numbers — listed on Bissell’s website. There, consumers can also find more information about registering for the recall and follow instructions for cutting the products’ cord and uploading photos.

On its site, Bissell said that “safety is our top priority,” later adding that the company chose to voluntarily recall these steam cleaners “out of an abundance of caution.”

The Bissell steam cleaners under recall were sold at major retailers including Target and Walmart, as well as online at sites like www.bissell.com and Amazon, from August 2008 through May 2024.

An estimated 3.2 million were purchased in the U.S. Nearly 355,000 were sold in Canada.

The company says it received three reports of fires involving the recalled fires but no injuries have been reported.

In addition to the light fixtures recalled in the United States, about 19,100 were sold in Canada.

The original steering wheel may have been replaced with a sport or M-sport steering wheel equipped with a Takata inflator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

If the inflator explodes, it may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants of a vehicle, resulting in serious injury or death, the NHTSA said.

BMW has not received any reports of any accidents or injuries in the U.S. that may be related to this issue, according to the latest report.

The agency said Wednesday that the recall of 394,029 vehicles includes certain 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan (324i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi), 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon (325xi, 328i, 328xi), and 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan (335d) vehicles.

BMW dealers will inspect and replace the driver’s air bag module as necessary for free.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on Aug. 23. Vehicle owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

Untreated water used on cucumbers linked to US salmonella outbreak, FDA finds https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/untreated-water-used-on-cucumbers-linked-to-us-salmonella-outbreak-fda-finds/3450842/ 3450842 post 9663440 FDA via AP, File https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/07/AP24184777243987.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Untreated water used by a Florida cucumber grower is one likely source of salmonella food poisoning that sickened nearly 450 people across the U.S. this spring, federal health officials said Tuesday.

But that grower doesn’t account for all of the cucumber-related illnesses and 125 hospitalizations that were reported from late March through early June, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Salmonella found in untreated canal water used by Bedner Growers Inc. of Boynton Beach, Florida, matched a strain of the bacteria that caused some of the illnesses in reported in more than 30 states and Washington, D.C. Additional types of salmonella were detected in soil and water samples collected at the site, FDA officials said.

Bedner Growers supplied Fresh Start Produce Sales of Delray Beach, Florida, which recalled crates of cucumbers in late May after the first illnesses were reported. Bedner Growers also supplied cucumbers to multiple places where ill people reported buying or eating the produce, FDA said.

Investigators originally said there were two outbreaks of salmonella possibly tied to cucumbers, but combined them into one because of several similarities, including the timing and the type of food. Nearly 70% of sick people interviewed reported eating cucumbers before they fell ill, the FDA said. The investigation is continuing.

Bedner Growers’ cucumber growing and harvesting season is over. There is no product from the farm remaining on the market, the FDA said, so there’s likely no ongoing risk to the public.

Recall issued for mushroom-infused chocolates and gummies after dozens of illnesses, hospitalizations reported https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/recall-issued-for-mushroom-infused-chocolates-and-gummies-after-dozens-of-illnesses-hospitalizations-reported/3450552/ 3450552 post 9662105 Diamond Shruumz https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/07/chocolate-bar_0004s_0001_birthday-cake-b.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,300 A brand of mushroom-infused chocolates and sweets has been recalled after dozens of consumers across the country became sick and some were hospitalized.

The nationwide recall for Diamond Shruumz-brand chocolate bars, cones and gummies was announced on Friday in a statement from the manufacturer, Prophet Premium Blends, published on the FDA website.

The FDA, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, America’s Poison Centers and state and local agencies, have launched an investigation into the illnesses.

NBC News has contacted the company for comment.

So far 39 illnesses from the candies have been reported, including 23 hospitalizations, as of June 23, the FDA statement said.

States that reported cases include Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee.

Prophet Premium Blends of Santa Ana, Calif., which makes the Diamond Shruumz candies, first initiated a recall on Thursday.

The company said that the products contain muscimol, a chemical found in some mushrooms, that “could be a potential cause of symptoms consistent with those observed in persons who became ill after eating Diamond Shruumz products.”

In that warning, Prophet Premium Blends said it received two complaints on May 27 regarding consumers who became ill after consuming an entire chocolate bar. The company reviewed the products’ Certificates of Analysis and found “higher than normal amounts of muscicol.”

The FDA and company are still investigating “the cause of the serious adverse effects.”

Those who became ill after eating the products reported a range of severe symptoms including: seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness, agitation, abnormal heart rates, hyper/hypotension, nausea and vomiting, the FDA warned.

Customers who purchased the products should immediately discard of them, as officials warned the products ”may appeal to children and teenagers.” Meanwhile, retailers are ordered to not sell or distribute any of the products, but “should hold the product in a secure location until additional instructions can be provided on how to return or safely dispose of the product.”

“It is crucial that all of our consumers refrain from ingesting this product while we, alongside the FDA, continue our investigation as to what is the cause of the serious adverse effects,” Prophet Premium Blends in a statement posted on the Diamond Shruumz website. “We prioritize the health and safety of our consumers above all else.”

Diamond Shruumz bills its products as meant for microdosing, meaning consuming small amounts of psychoactive or hallucinogenic substances, however the company’s website also says its products don’t contain psychedelic substances.

Several toxicology experts previously told NBC News the mushrooms listed as ingredients, such as lion’s mane or ashwagandha, don’t produce the potent effects that the company touts, like relaxation or euphoria.

Aldi Chocolate chip muffins recalled nationwide https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/aldi-chocolate-chip-muffins-recalled-nationwide/3448142/ 3448142 post 9654331 U.S. Food and Drugs Administration https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/06/Chocolate-chip-muffins-recall.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,237 Aldi Chocolate chip muffins are recalled nationwide.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Aldi Bakeshop Chocolate Chip Muffins 4 count have been recalled due to an allergy alert for undeclared walnuts.

Over 11,000 cases are affected.

Aldi Bakeshop issued a voluntary recall announcement shared on the FDA website warning consumers that the product may contain walnuts, despite the ingredient not being listed on the packaging.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to walnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the recall announcement states.

The recalled “Aldi – Bakeshop Chocolate Chip Muffin 4 count” was distributed nationwide in Aldi retail stores.

The recalled Bakeshop Chocolate Chip Muffin 4 count is marked with lot # NF1 142Y on the top and UPC on the label 4099100048278.

The FDA says no illnesses or adverse effects concerning this recall have been reported to date.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the walnut-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of walnut.

According to an investigation the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes.

Production of the product has been suspended until the FDA and the company are certain that the problem has been corrected.

Consumers who have purchased 4-count packages of “Aldi – Bakeshop Chocolate Chip Muffin” are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumers with questions may contact the company at customercare@fgfbrands.com.

Volkswagen recalls over 271,000 SUVs because front passenger air bag may not inflate in a crash https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/volkswagen-suv-recall-front-passenger-air-bag/3445509/ 3445509 post 2964402 AP https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2019/09/AP_154035651379.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Volkswagen is recalling more than 271,000 SUVs in the U.S. because the front passenger air bag may not inflate in a crash.

The recall covers certain Atlas SUVs from the 2021 through 2024 model years, and some 2020 through 2024 Atlas Cross Sport SUVs.

VW says in documents posted Wednesday by U.S. safety regulators that wiring under the front passenger seat can develop a fault. If that happens, it could deactivate the sensor that determines if a passenger is on board, disabling the air bag and increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

If a fault happens, drivers would get a warning sound and an error message on the instrument panel. VW says in documents that owners should avoid use of the front passenger seat if possible until the recall repairs have been made.

Dealers will replace the sensor mat and wiring harness at no cost to owners, who are expected to get letters starting Aug. 16.

VW said it has 1,730 warranty claims that could be related to the problem.

Nearly 300 canned coffee products recalled nationwide over botulism concerns https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/nearly-300-canned-coffee-products-recalled-nationwide-over-botulism-concerns/3445387/ 3445387 post 9645648 Getty Images https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/06/GettyImages-157528129.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The coffee company Snapchill is recalling hundreds of its canned coffee products over botulism concerns, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The Wisconsin-based company is voluntarily recalling nearly 300 canned coffee products because the current manufacturing process “could lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulinum, in low acid canned foods.”

The FDA statement notes the company is not aware of any instances of its products containing the toxin, nor have any illnesses been reported associated with consuming the products.

Botulinum toxin causes botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, according to the FDA. Symptoms include weakness, dizziness, double-vision, trouble with speaking or swallowing, difficulty in breathing, abdominal distention and constipation. Symptoms can begin from six hours to two weeks after eating contaminated food.

The recalled products were distributed and sold nationwide through various roaster and brand names in cans ranging from 7 ounces to 12 ounces.

The recalled products are identifiable by the language “Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC” underneath the nutrition facts panel. Some of the products can also be identified by the text “Snapchill Coffee” on the label.

Consumers are advised to either destroy the products or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Snapchill will offer full refunds for any of these products, with appropriate proof of purchase including a picture of the product before being destroyed. Full information about the return and refund will be available on the company’s website.

21 million Miniverse toy sets recalled after reports of burns and respiratory irritation https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/21-million-miniverse-toy-sets-recalled-after-reports-of-burns-and-respiratory-irritation/3444959/ 3444959 post 9644631 CPSC https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/06/miniverse-make-it-mini-toy-recalled-2x1-zz-240625-2f8d6e.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,150 More than 21 million Miniverse “Make It Mini” sets by California toymaker MGA Entertainment are being recalled because of potentially hazardous resins, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported June 25.

The resins, when in liquid form, can cause skin, eye and respiratory irritation or sensitization if inhaled, touched or ingested.

The resins contain acrylates in amounts prohibited in children’s products by the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. The resins do not present hazards after they change form from a liquid to a solid, said the CPSC.

MGA Entertainment, who also owns LOL Surprise and Little Tikes among other toy brands, has so far received 26 reports of kids and adults who were harmed by the toys, including reports of skin burns and irritation, and respiratory irritation, said the CPSC. In one case, a consumer’s asthma was triggered by exposure to one of the toys.

More than 21 million sets of the toys have been recalled in the United States with roughly a million more recalled in Canada.

The recalled toy sets include “Make It Mini Appliances,” all models and series of “Make It Mini Food” and “Make It Mini Lifestyle.”

Many of the sets are packaged in a sphere that contains the materials required to assemble the intended miniature imitation “appliance,” “food” or “lifestyle” items.

The CPSC noted that the resin packaging in each toy set may mimic food items such as a jar of peanut butter, a maple syrup bottle and a milk container, and the resins imitate food when hardened.

The toys were sold at Target, Walmart, Family Dollar, Dollar General, Aldi, Hobby Lobby and other stores nationwide, and also online at Amazon.com, from October 2022 through June 2024.

The toys were priced at $7 and $13 for individual sets and $14 to $52 for sets sold in a box.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the toys and to contact MGA Entertainment to receive a pre-paid label to return either: (a) the entire product, including the unused resin, if the product has not been opened, or (b) the unused resins and a photograph of the product if the product has been opened.

Consumers can opt to receive a full refund or a replacement product.

For a full list of the recalled Miniverse “Make It Mini” sets, consult the CPSC website.

Consumers can reach MGA Entertainment by calling 800-222-4685 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, or emailing at mvcustomer_care@mgae.com.

In a notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration’s website, Totally Cool Inc. said it had already ceased production and distribution of the affected products after the agency’s sampling revealed the presence of Listeria cells.

Listeria is a bacteria that, when ingested, can lead to mild gastroenteritis and fever, but in more vulnerable populations can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.

The affected products include:

  • Hershey’s 38 fluid ounce vanilla and chocolate flavored ice cream cakes; 110 fluid ounce vanilla and chocolate flavored ice cream cakes; 4 fluid ounce Cookies & Cream Ice Cream Cones; and 4 fluid ounce Cookies & Cream Polar Bear Ice Cream Sandwiches.

  • Friendly’s 60 fluid ounce Celebration Ice Cream Cakes; 40 fluid ounce Strawberry Krunch Ice Cream Cakes.

No illnesses have been reported. The company said it is continuing its investigation and is taking preventive actions.

Ford recalls over 550,000 F-150's because transmissions can suddenly downshift to 1st gear https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/consumer/recall-alert/ford-f150-recall-over-transmission-issue/3443809/ 3443809 post 7366065 Matt Rourk/AP (File) https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2022/08/FORD-RECALL.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Ford is recalling more than 550,000 pickup trucks in the U.S. because the transmissions can unexpectedly downshift to first gear no matter how fast the trucks are going.

The recall covers certain F-150 pickups from the 2014 model year. Ford’s F-Series pickups are the top-selling vehicles in the U.S.

Ford says in documents posted Tuesday by U.S. safety regulators that the downshifting can cause drivers to lose control of the trucks, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recalls come after U.S. auto safety regulators in March began investigating complaints that more than 540,000 Ford pickup trucks from 2014 can abruptly downshift to a lower gear and increase the risk of a crash.

Documents say the problem is caused by a lost signal between a transmission speed sensor and the powertrain control computer. There also could be corrosion and problems with connector pins.

Dealers will update the powertrain control software at no cost to owners, who will be notified by letters in early July.

In a statement Tuesday, Ford said it expects repairs to be available in the third quarter of this year. Owners will be able to use mobile service or pickup and delivery at participating dealers.

Ford says in documents posted Tuesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it has 396 warranty and field reports and 124 customer complaints about the problem, covering 482 trucks.

The Dearborn, Michigan, automaker says it knows of 130 complaints to the government, with 52 alleging that rear wheels locked up or that drivers lost control of the trucks. Two of the complainants reported injuries and one reported a crash that could have been caused by the problem, Ford said.

Ford’s statement said that before the trucks downshift, drivers could see a malfunction indicator light on the dashboard. In some cases, signals can be restored while the trucks are moving, and they can be driven normally. In other cases drivers may need to stop and restart the engine to get the transmissions to work properly.

The company says it expects fewer than 1% of the recalled vehicles to have the problem.

NHTSA said it started its investigation in March after getting complaints about sudden downshifts in the trucks’ automatic transmissions.

The agency is looking into whether those trucks should have been included in previous recalls for the problem.

Ford started recalling trucks and other vehicles from the 2011 and 2012 model years in 2016, and added two recalls in 2019 covering pickups from the 2011 to 2013 model years. The recalls covered about 1.5 million vehicles.

The company said it’s working with NHTSA to support the investigation.

Vitamix recalls nearly 570,000 blender parts after dozens of reported injuries https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/vitamix-recalls-nearly-570000-blender-parts-after-dozens-of-reported-injuries/3442538/ 3442538 post 9637951 TODAY Illustration https://media.nbclosangeles.com/2024/06/vitamix.png?fit=300,199&quality=85&strip=all Vitamix is recalling hundreds of thousands of its blending containers and blade bases after receiving dozens of reports of injuries, federal regulators said Thursday.

On June 20, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shared a notice that Vitamix is voluntarily recalling its Ascent Series and Venturist Series eight-ounce and 20-ounce blending containers and blade bases, noting the containers can separate from the bases, exposing the blades and posing a laceration hazard to consumers.

The recall affects 569,000 parts — this includes 105,000 that were previously recalled in August 2018 (at the time, the company advised customers to pause use and offered repair kits as a remedy).

According to the CPSC, Vitamix has received 27 reports of lacerations that happened when user’s hands have come in contact with exposed blades, including the 11 reported injuries from the 2018 recall.

“Despite the rigorous testing each product undergoes before going to market, Vitamix often learns a great deal about its products after they’ve been used by thousands of people in real-life situations,” a representative from Vitamix tells TODAY.com via email, adding that the brand aims to continue improving customers’ experiences.

The clear containers and black blade bases being recalled are sold as individual parts, but also come with certain Vitamix Venturist and Ascent Series blenders. The recall lists Venturist V1200, Ascent A2300, Ascent A2500, Ascent A3300 and Ascent A3500 as some of the affected products.

The parts are also sold as sets or bundles in various configurations with a Vitamix logo printed on the blending container.

Vitamix blenders sit at the higher end of the market when it comes to pricing. On the brand’s website, Ascent blenders sell for between $549.95 — $749.95. Venturist series blenders can cost up to $549.95 for the V1200 model.

Vitamix is not offering a replacement or a refund as part of the recall. The company instructs anyone with these parts to immediately stop using the products and contact the company via a dedicated recall website for a repair kit.

Customers are told to look for the date code located on the recalled blade in “MM-YY format.”

The company told CNN that it worked with Health Canada and the U.S. CPSC to evaluate potential remedies, agreeing on the repair kit as a solution.

“Vitamix’s top priority is the safety of its customers,” a representative for the brand told CNN. “To ensure Vitamix has a well-built product, Vitamix products undergo extensive testing, leveraging the 130+ test procedures in Vitamix’s catalog to assess every component for quality and durability.”

The parts were sold at Costco, Best Buy, Crate & Barrel, Macy’s, Target, Williams Sonoma, Walmart and other specialty and independent stores nationwide for between $30 and $990. They were also sold online at Vitamix.com, Amazon.com and QVC.com from April 2017 through May 2024.
